Young anarchist killed by the Police in Bogotá, Colombia

Today the doctors announced the death of Nicolás David Neira Alvares, a 15 year old who was marching in the anarchist block the past 1st of May. Like never before in the past few years, many young people decided to come together to protest against capitalism.

The huge demonstration which included union workers, farmers, students, unemployed people and activists, marched in a non-violent manner on one of the main streets of Bogotá. The demonstration not only remembered those who were killed by the State in Chicago, but also denounced the current precarious economical and social conditions of Colombia, demanded a halt to the Free Trade Treatise and made public the atrocities that are being committed by the current fascist government. Atrocities that also occurred this day when the ESMAD (police) started to throw tear gas without any reason, and after one explosion, initiated a violent repression hitting the protesters with wooden sticks and rubber bullets.

It was precisely during this repression that various people were severely injured, including Nicolás who was beaten up on the head by the police until he lost consciousness. Approximately 8 policemen surrounded Nicolás and covered themselves with masks impeding the remaining protesters to see their faces and to rescue him from their hands.

After sometime, Nicolás was finally taken by some comrades to a Hospital in the Westside of Bogotá. There he waited for some hours until he was taken to the Salud Coop Hospital were he remained in critical conditions until today.

During this week, many people tried to denounce the situation, writing articles in the alternative media, helping the family, organizing a public sue and protesting in the streets. It is now known that many of these persons are being harassed by the police. Right now the media are covering the whole affair by trying to hide the real facts. The ESMAD are saying that they never beat the protesters.

The sad death of Nicolás and the violent repression done by the police is the consequence of this unjust system that seeks to silence all those voices that are trying to create a world of freedom and equality. All this information must be urgently known and divulgated. We don’t want to stay silent.

International Protest against Police Brutality - 13
May 2005.

In memory of Nicolas Neira Alvarez, 15 years old.

Following the death of Nicolas Neira, who was detained
and savagely beaten by riot police during the May Day
march in Bogota, socialorganisations across Colombia
and the world are urging their supporters to send
messages of protest to the Colombian authorities on 13
May 2005.

15 year old Nicolas, a secondary school student who
was marching with the"libertarian block" was stopped
during the May Day march by members of the specialist
ESMAD riot squad. Several riot police then beat him
into unconsciousness. Following the assault, the
police, instead of calling for an ambulance, called for
reinforcements to attack witnesses to their brutality,
several of whom were subsequently hit with
rubber bullets. Unlike regular Colombian police, ESMAD
members wear noidentification tags and cover their
faces with balaclavas.

Nicolas was eventually taken to hospital, where he
remained in a comauntil he died on 6 May.

Since his death, the police have launched a vicious
campaign to slander Nicolas and his family. Nicolas
father has complained of almost constant threats
against him during the last week, which he is sure are
comingfrom the police themselves. Similarly, on 8 May
the police appeared on national television accusing
Nicolas of painting slogans in support of jailed FARC
leader Simon Trinidad at the time of his arrest.
Nicolas friends want you to know that this is
completely false, lies invented bythe police to try to
justify his killing.

Please send messages of protest to the authorities
listed below,urging:

The immediate capture of the ESMAD agents responsible
for Nicolas Neira sdeath.
The immediate dissolution of the ESMAD squads.
Protection for the family of Nicolas Neira, who since
his death have been receiving constant death threats
from the police.
That the Colombian State and all state entities take
proper measures toprotect the right to social protest
and mobilisation, and the freedom of expression.

Sample Letter below:

Dear Sir

I am writing to express my horror at the vile murder
of 15 year oldNicolas Neira Alvarez, at the hands of
the police during the May Daymarch in Bogota. I urge
the Colombian authorities to take all
appropriatemeasures to arrest and sanction those
agents responsible. Furthermore Iurge you to
immediately disband the ESMAD riot squads in the face
of suchoverwhelming evidence that they abuse their
special powers anddispensations for such murderous
ends.

Finally, I ask that the Colombian State and all state
entities put intopractice measures to protect the
right to protest and freedom ofexpression that are
guaranteed by national and international norms. Ialso
request that you take the necessary measures to
protect the lives ofNicolas Neira s family, who have
received a string of threats followingNicolas death.

A 15 year old, peacefully questioning the countries ways, is murdered by the country.

Finally, a martyr worthy of martyrdom.

I think we should actually make him a martyr for the cause. It will gain sympathetic ears and support. It would also give him some justice for his brutal murder.

May Nicholas Alvares rest in peace.

I guess just make them martyrs as well. But the thing about Nicholas is that he was very young and we have it on good authority that he was killed without justifiable reason, except that he was an anarchist.
