I recently saw an American TV program about an apparel company based out of Los Angeles, CA that manufactures their clothes using non-sweatshop labour. The workers were paid up to $12/hr, given medical insurance, and worked in a clean, well ventilated, and realitivley safe environment. After viewing the program i went online and researched the company, seeing if they sold in certain stores or had thier own stores. They did have thier own chain of stores, and as I suspected the clothes (most t-shirts, some sweatshirts) were very expensive.

Of course it is great that the clothes are manufactured by well paid, and treated employees. However their retail costs could only be afforded by what I like to call "Yuppies", white (usually), upper middle class liberals. The kind that put a "save the Earth" bumper sticker on thier hummer.

Is there a better way to eliminate sweatshop labour, or will the costs always be greater for the consumer?
