View Full Version : Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Roses in the Hospital

Just got back from seeing the new film.
All in all I was fairly impressed, it was well cast, the effects were good and they did well to get a vaguely coherent plot out of it. However, all of the best bits were those lifted more or less directly from the books.
The only thing I can say against it is the love story seemed a little tacked on and, although I couldn't fault any of the main cast (Zaphod in particualr was really good) one more of them, probably Trillian, should have been British, as the scenes without Arthur seemed too Americanised for such a British comedy.
In conclusion, it was as good as it could have been, giving the difficuilty in transfering to yet another medium, and is definately worth seeing...

How big was John Malvovich's role in the movie? I know his character was written into the movie by Adams. I just want to know how big of a character he would just add into his work.

If I'm thinking of the right character he had only two scenes, about five minutes screen time at most and nothing that changes the storyline to a great extent...

I think it was quite good, but the love thing was too big, in the book its a small sub plot.

There's five hitchhikers' books:
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Restraunt at the End of the Universe
Life, the Universe and Everything
So Long and Thanks for all the Fish and
Mostly Harmless
The movie is a rough adaptation of the first one...

The Book was much better. I love the intro, thought it was hilarious. The romantic subplot could have been dropped entirely. I didnt like the enterpretation of the whole Deep THought scene. I imagined something diffferent. VERY different.
John Malcovich's part confused me, cause at the time I didnt remember reading it. Then i went back and reread the first part of the book and infally figured it was just written into the movie.
I liked it :) I've never read the books though....I loved Marvin though, I wanted to hug him and take him home...

I love his depression. He makes me feel so much better about my shitty existence.
Fron what I have read the film is meant to be absolute crap, which is a dissapointment seeing as the original radio series is one of the funniest things ever.
I'll still watch it though....

I read the book when I was a kid, but I've forgotten most of the plot. I haven't been out to see it yet, I'll probably wait to rent it.

I've read all five books multiple times and think that they are very funny. I listened to the radio plays and thought that they were very funny (though was unhappy that there were only 12 parts when there definatly needed to be more).
I will wait until the movie comes out on video before watching it. After talking to some people and reading reviews and stuff.
Notice how the books have a lot of stuff that isn't in the play and the play has stuff that isn't in the books. And the order of events are changed around some what between the two. The movie is not based on the books so much as it is based on the idea of the H2G2 universe.

Ive read the books up to "So Long And Thanks For All The Fish". My favorite things in the book is Marvin, the opening pages, and when Ford Prefect and Arthur comes back to Earth, in another era!
Im going to see the movie soon. I was hoping it was more British, but making Ford african-american american was after my taste wrong, as well as Trillian should be "Arab looking". At least this is what Ive sen from the trailers. But Marvin is still God and that makes up for it.

Anyone seen the TV series done by the BBC? That was pretty good.

I haven't seen the TV series, but I've read the book and saw the movie, the movie wasn't that great, it seemed very lacking, but it was enjoyable at sometimes, and I'm pretty sure anybody that's read the book and seen the movie would be very pissed that they left out the hyper intelligent shade of blue.

The book was never as good as the origional radio adaption, from which the book was derrived.
It was written for radio, so I suppose it goes without saying, thats the best format for it.

I've talked to a fair few people who were fans (teachers) about the movie and what they thought and the overwhelming opinion seems to be that the TV series was true to the books, extended upon them was better and that the movie was amusing but lightweight pap when viewed in the context of the books and then the series. I started reading the book years ago but didn't really I don't think like it and didn't finish it. So I was bored and had to kill time in town before I saw the dentist so I went to see the movie and I would say I was involved and somewhat amused but I really wanted more and it just seemed to gloss over things to quickly for me and came off as dull and as though not much had gone into making it good so much as had gone into making it flow from scene to scene easily for the dumb american public. By the end of it I felt a bit cheated; but I don't know if this ties inot the same reasons as why I didn't finish the main book or not?
They tried to juice the humour too much and killed it for me I wanted more sardonic, cynical, droll humour like the improabability drive and the bad poetry rather than shit slapstick being done to death
I also felt there weren't enough twists. Does anybody else agree with this?
