So looking round the pub tonight, i realised in a drunken state that evreyone in that pub me included and all my friends will gradually get old and then die.

Evreything we work for in life, evreything we know and cherish will be destroyed with our death and the new group of life will take over.

So quite frankly what is the point of our lifes, i'm actually starting to get very depressed and scared as stupid as that may sound.

DISCUSS !

What is the pourpose of our lives? Death. If you really think about it, we are dying everyday. With every passing second we are closer to death. It is an inevitable part of evolution. You can look at it in dialectics. We are slowly and gradualy dying right now and then there will be a short, drastic change; death. Basically, as depressing as it is, life is nothing but a slow death.

I disagree, life is growth, from birth to infancy, adulthood, to death. If you view it simply as just dying then youre missing out on the beauty of life. The chance to expeirence the world, to learn, to become more evovlved as person. By acting for a better future through certain poliical/social means, you also invest in the future and make a contribution to the next generations. Is there a point to life? I have no idea, no one does, but why live your life with such a pessimistic view? Of course we are all going to die, but until we do why not revel in the life that was given to us?

The revolutionary has a great love for humanity. A great love of life and its value. Without such love there is no point to act, no reason to seek justice, equality and freedom for the people.

I guess you have to go on a spiritual journey... This can take minutes, hours, days, weeks or even mouths... I think you should go camping or something ....

There is no purpose in life, and there is nothing in this world to live for.

Oh? And the point of the next generation then? If this is so, then why should we fight for a revolution, and a change in society ;)

P.S. Do not imply that this thread should be merged with the "Death and Ethics"-thread.

That's a whole different thang, perhaps this thread SHOULD just have a different name. Humnh. This is more like about the question of Death ITSELF, dying and purpose, while the other is like, the Ethics of Life, and Killing, etc.

The first 9 months of a man's life are about getting out, the purpose of the rest of the life is to get back in.

This is why we should spend the short amount of time on this earth helping to change peoples lives for the better like Che had done, instead of worrying about how many "toys" we can accumulate. A persons toys don't last, a persons ideals are the true measure of a man.(or woman)

I felt that... as I was told that I was graduating I suddenly panicked, the life I had known, the bubble, was to burst... I felt that strongly then.
I've tried to always see "what's the worst thing which can happen" which has led me to having a dysfunctional relationship with many people.

I find That I love Kurt Vonnegut and in Cat's Cradle he talks a lot about death, the end of the world, the usefulness of a religion based on lies.

Being the eternally depressed wierdo I am, my answer to that is always: Get Living! or get dying!

I mean yeah, nothing really matters, but you mught as well try to enjoy life with an understanding that you and your times only hold significance for a short period of time.

Dwarf Kirlston

significance? how is it significant?

because it determines the future?

OleMarxco

The future is ours...unless you believe in destiny :D
Which is also ours, you goddamn determinist! Nothing is significant, you goddamn nihilist! ARR! God must be laughing at us, right now.

I think the whole purpose of life is to prove yourself, make the right decisisions, make a diffirence, and help improve other people lives in some way, i think that if you help and bennifit the world enough, youll be rewarded in some way, wether in this world by other people, or by your own emotions, or in some other world.

The only time you truly live is when you're in the womb, every second after that is just growing closer to death. But you can take it on from another point of view, every second after that you learn more and gain more, therefore you can grow. It's about how you look at it. I hate to look at where I am now because I understand I'm getting older, but we have to be older and smarter to make changes.

God must be laughing
I think god hasn't a sense of humor, I think he cares not about anything or anyone, this world or any world - if god exists.

I find religion silly for that reason, I think that out of a tabula rassa a conciousness like that would not have arisen.

Death is the end for some and the new beginning to others depending on your beliefs but honestly it shouldn't be feared. You should instead use death as an inspiration to use the time you do have to live to it's fullest potential. This doesn't mean give into all the physical pleasures of the world but to developed yourself as a loving, loved, and wise person so your legacy will not be forgotten. Allow death to push you into life, so to speak.

Nobody can tell you the meaning of life, the greatest minds have been looking into it for millenia. Don't let anybody tell you what you're meaning is, you have to figure that out yourself.
The biological reason for life is to create more life, but that isn't very rational considering the world is already over populated, but nature can't change what is in you genes no matter how bad we are fucking it up.
Death just happens when our bodies break. Our bodies are only machines, they do break.

I really like this quote, although it could be taken both ways. If you know you're dying, and live every day to the fullest (as you do not know when you'll die) it's still getting the beauty of life. But the thought of growth/decay really comes down to whether you're a pessimist or an optimist. I'm rather pessimistic, and I agree, we die everyday; through aging and cell degeneration. That's my belief on this issue.
