I'm not a member myself but a very close friend of mine is. Actually I don't know are they really working in Estonia, she is in Finland. Where from to find this out?

I am a member but I feel it is a case of "parking the ambulance at the bottom of a cliff"syndrome.Still,as with the trade unions it is the only protection available for many people.

Maaja.I think you are right about them not being active in Estonia though.

Also, the beginning of the article below is an example of a good organisation being manipulated for purposes other than that originally intended.

It really doesn't exist in Estonia! How can that be true?! Once again I am quite disappointed....

Hmmm, I think I'm a member. I keep getting "membership renewal" notices from them, for I've given them money in the past. It's a good group.

vox,

what do you do there as a member?

Nateddi,

Not a damn thing, which is why I qualified my "membership." I think a better description would be "benefactor."

I'm not sure if I'm an official member, but I'm the vice president of the Amnesty club at my school.

I'm not a member, but a "human rights defender", meaning I donate a set amount to them each month. They send me the newsletter every month as well, and I write letters or take part in things like candle day to raise money for amnesty.

Don't forget, 18th of October is candle day in Australia, so when you run into the volunteers, please donate some money!

I have found that in Enngland at least you have to be 18 to join!!!

]That is really pathetic.

There are collectors and stuff but it should tell you at www.amnesty.org
I have been a member for a couple of years. It's funny because I only signed up because a really cute girl came up to me in the street, :) but since joining I have realised they do a lot of good work, and I have done collections for them. It's nice to have a charity that'll take on governments :) you can do letter writing and go on their 'urgent action' list where they will email you to ask you to help in campaigns.

I know, I know....I wasn't aware of socialism then. In act I was completely unawre of pretty much everything, except knowing the world was a shitty place, and I was I was exceptionally depressed....

And yes, a cute girl coming up to me made my day a whole lot better :)
It isn't as material and pointless as it sounds.

Hey there are lots of cute girls in amnesty! Me for one!

Anyway there are a couple of ways to be a member. YOu can be a donator who jsut gives them money from time to time. You can be a member who simply writes letters. You can also become a more active member by being on boards, and do varoius other things.

I have been a member for two years now. used to be very active including attending a human rights college. the best way to get info is the web site. there are contact emails on there that can give you more info.

good luck.

I get the donating thing, but HOW do I join?
To join AI, go to the AI USA website (http://www.amnestyusa.org) and click "join" along the top of site. Than it says "make a donation and become a member", click to join online under that. Next is four options (join, member gifts, non-member gifts, and renew membership). Once you've clicked "join", it asks for your name, location, and basic information. After submiting that, it shows next to make a donation ($25.00 minimum) and ability to pay with credit card (I am sure you can pay in other forms).

Members get a year subscription to their magazine and some things - membership card of course too. I have no idea how long a membership lasts; I would guess a year.

Any donation $25.00 or more makes the donater a member I do believe, hence why some of you who donated and get renew requests. :)

I am not a member, but I looked into how to become one lately, however I saw it was $25 minimum and had to change my mind as I only have $50 to my name at this point! I need a fuck'n job!

I'm very interested in Amnesty, my mum's a member, is it true that you can't join in the UK until you're 18? That sucks, i have to wait for 2 more years then. There are severall representatives or somesuch for Amnesty at my school and every so often we write letters. Once a guy came from Tibet and talked aobut when he was in prison there and had been tortured, ti was shocking, it's stuff like that I want to stop. Sorry communists, but that is wrong, your ideas may be good, but if that's what it's like in practice then I'll stick to being pink.
