I'm entering a debate on Wendsday against 3 crazy girls my age (16.) And I have basically built up a strategy against them. I know they are going to come out with those good old Christain values, for one thing. " The right to live! " " It's murder! "
The three girls are Republican's and Christains..
So far I have came up with this:
Do you believe in the death penalty?
Do you agree with the war in Iraq?
I need some help thinking of some more hard hitting points..
Thanks.

If you are so "pro-life", how come you don't oppose extracting tumours?

If they claim they're pro-life and they're for any war and the death penalty (and any other death-related stuff), they're not pro-life. Period.

If you support the war on terror, why do you support the Bush administration?

The obvious come back to that one is that people who get the death penalty are always guilty murderer types and all Iraqis are clearly bad guys, unlike the innocent little babies...
It pays to take into account possible counter arguments...

Why focus on abortion when the Christian fundementalists could focus on the big corporations such as Philip Morris or McDonalds, which kill many more people a year than aborition. But, they are Christians, so i doubt their thinking capacity

The primary argument for pro-life nonsense is a moral one. Your best bet is to destroy any other objective reasoning that they may try to say backs it up by presenting a number of objective reasons in the opposite direction.
Many women who do not want to carry a child to term (for whatever reasons) will seek alternative and more dangeorus methods of aborting the child if legal abortion means were not available. This can not only kill the child, but harm the mother as well.
Adoption is NOT an option. I would suggest finding statistics for wherever you live, and guaranteed you'll spot the issues with adoption. In many cases adoption rates are decreasing, and as children put up for adoption grow older the fewer people looking to adopt will not adopt an older child. As they grow older they do not have the benefits of even a moderately stable family (economically speaking). Children in orphanages with little resources or adopted by foster families who don't end up actually caring for the child lead to greater poverty and consequently crime.
There are a number of cases where carrying a child to term can be extremely difficult, especially for those who lack family support to begin with -- and thus, the problem can often perpetuate itself i.e. if the father leaves the mother during the pregnancy and dodges child support etc.
Single mothers who come out of high school may not have the time or money, while caring for a child, to get a higher education and are forced into jobs that they can get immediately to support themselves, again increasing poverty. Without a family or the money for daycare even young children are frequently left alone while the mother has to go to work.
If the child is born with an illness, mothers in these situations may not have the means to properly acquire the medical attention these children need and they live and or die in a life of suffering.
If abortion did become illegal, and mothers were to carry children to term, adoption services/orphanages/shelters would be filled to the brim, creating more and more problems over time as the excess children not adopted grow older, and the process may repeat itself.

What about the mothers life, doesn't the quality of life matter? And what about the fact that more women die of child birth in some parts of Detroit than in sub saharan Africa? Surley the Bush reigieme shoudl put more money into health?

Sperm are all living organisms and millions of them die everyday, jsut because by a random mistake one is allowed to grow in a fetus it means suddenly it's more alive?
Also, if they pull something illogical, and christian, like, "well a fetus has a soul" or anything like that, you can respond, "I'm not going to get into some circular religious argument here, please, let's stick to just what we can prove"

Q. How old are you?
Follow-up question: When are you counting from?
An egg is not a chicken, and an acorn is not an oak tree. Nobody holds a funeral every time she has an unusually heavy period. (It could very possibly be a miscarriage. They happen all the time, often without the woman ever knowing she's pregnant.)
In short, nobody acts as if they really believe that a fertilized egg is the same as a person.
It's only when it comes to abortion that this idea is maintained, promoted by those who don't want women to have too much control of their reproductive capabilities. Many of these people also opposed and still oppose birth control.

On a related topic, here is a fine article on the Christian fascist "Pregnancy Centers"...
How They Deceive Women: My Visit to a "Pregnancy Resource Center"
The posters appear on nearly every train in my city. Next to the image of a troubled young woman, big block letters spell out, "Considering ABORTION? Know Your Options," followed by an 800 number. I have looked around at the women on the train, wondering how many knew the truth about who is behind these signs. I think with horror of the women who unknowingly visit one of these centers and run smack up against a growing campaign, organized and funded by the Christian Right and designed to guilt-trip and deceive women into giving birth.

PS to Severian: this is, by the way, a good example of what RCPers can do when they pull their heads out of Avakian's ass.

i remember i pissed one of them off so badly that the teacher stopped the debate. i recall saying something to the effect that not only is unconstitutional, but it's totalrianism and theocratic for a government to say you can't abort a child because it's against the celestial overlord's wishes.
i recently remembered this website and came to see what i had been posting here back in 2005. i was 16, and obviously dumb as a sack of rocks. and why the fuck is my name fallout boy? terrible band. :blushing:
