View Full Version : Work Ethic
Attempted Optimist

I spoke to a guy today about my ideas and beliefs, and he reckons that Communism can only work in a poor country e.g. China. He says the reason it wouldn't work here (UK) is because if everyone had their share of the country's wealth, we'd all by millionaires, or near enough millionaires.
If this is true, if people were millionaires, they wouldn't need to work and therefore probably wouldn't, so how would you motivate a millionaire to work?
Sorry is this question has a 'noobish' nature. :)
Regards,
Ben.

Interesting point, though I think you're figures are probably a bit far fetched, however if there was enough money for us to all be millionaires in communist UK, the consensus would probably be that a significant proportion should go towards preventing poverty in other countries and furthering the revolutionary movement overseas.
You've also got to take into account the first part of the 'from ability to need' maxim. Nobody is going to be given millions for sitting on they're arse all day, everybody should be doing something...

China is a rich country although a lot of people may be poor and certainly not communist.
I want to get rid of money, a system of inequality. So the money is really a system of exploitation. Without money the means of production would be shared out and society would work on 'from each according to their ability, to each according to their need'

You know that there are lots of wealthy people who don't have to work but nevertheless do...why is that?
Ok, some of them are insatiably greedy and "never have enough".
But the real difference between all of us and our "superiors" is that they work when they want and at what they really enjoy.
And that's a HUGE difference.
We humans seem to enjoy purposeful activity more than anything else -- contrary to the bourgeois myth, we are not "lazy" by "nature".
We are lazy by social situation or class...we do not want to labor to make some rich bastard even richer. We do not want to take orders from stupid people. We fiercely resent being treated like machines...or slaves.
And thus we are lazy under capitalism.
When we are free to choose our work and its conditions freely, then I'm pretty confident that what's needed will get done.

Recycled, probably.
Though some of it would be saved for museum exhibits. :D
