note; my teacher has been to indo-china and is a staunch anti-communist

I don't know how much time you have, but I read a what I consider to be a great book, 'Ho Chi Minh: A Life' - The author, though not a communist himself, does not attack Ho, but rather presents a well researched biography which is based in fact. It's around 600 pages if I remember, but I found it very interesting, and was able to read it in a very short period of time.
