Just because The Velvet Underground doesn't have insanely complicated riffs and is a god among progressive metal or something doesn't really make them bad. Simplicity is sometimes the best--something I think Sublime proves many times over.
Listen, I DO recognize they're not that bad and that they were original, but I just don't see why they are worshipped that much by so many people. I don't mind if a song is simple or complex, I just don't find anything interesting in their music: their songs are too repetitive, slow, boring, predictable (at least most of the times), their melodies are too dumb and their atmospheres bore me. Plus their music (and their album's production) sounds outdated.
Prog metal sucks, by the way.

I love The Velvet Underground. Lou Reed is one of my favorite songwriters and musicians ever. I'll agree that The Velvet Underground and Nico album is a bit over rated, since I think Lou Reed is so much cooler than Nico. Although Nico is still kick-ass.
They do have a awkward droning tone due to Cale's tuned-down pitch on his various instruments. But the songs have a subtle beauty in their extreme simplicity. Somewhere in the dark-sounding and unconventional lack of melody, there is amazing beauty! It's awesome!! Fucking kudos to The VU.
And not all prog metal sucks. Rush may be lame, but King Crimson owns.
Some of the new shit these days that passes for prog metal is really just slightly slower heavy metal. That shit is shit.

He had some good songs in his solo carreer.

Yeah, but King Crimson is not really "metal": they just have some "heavier" songs.

They should've been called "The Velvet Boredom".
What's so great about those guys? They're SO overrated. Sure, they might have influenced lots of people, but all the songs i've heard by them are mediocre and boring, excepting for "Heroin" whose crescendos are a bit more interesting.

These guys have some great songs IMO. I like em. Something about the way they play with their emotion is amazing. To each his own.

They're very mellow. Sometimes a good World Inferno hepped-up song does me good and sometimes a laid back Heroin or Femme Fatal or whatever it is does me good. Just because The Velvet Underground doesn't have insanely complicated riffs and is a god among progressive metal or something doesn't really make them bad. Simplicity is sometimes the best--something I think Sublime proves many times over.

the velvet underground had two of the most masterful musicians ever, reed and cale. and i was informed the other day by a co-worker at the co-op that jeff buckley actually stole his "hallelujah" tabs from john cale. so now i'll have to hunt down cale's version of hallelujah. apparently it's on the shrek 2 soundtrack. anyway, the VU has loads of finesse and proves yet again that you don't have to chug out major noise to make music.

I am not a big VU fan but a nice bit of Heroin or Waiting For The Man is always welcomed. Also, the Hallelujah from the Shrek soundtrack is Rufus Wainright or whatever, its a good cut though. (I'm also a huge Jeff Buckley fan if you want to know). The VU may not be everyone's cup of tea but their influence and originality is monumental.
Furthermore, to anyone who hates prog metal, just listen to Dream Theater's The Killing Hand!

Yeah, while they may not be the most talented among musicians, The Velvets were an enormous influcence on every form of modern nusic. And their listenability cannot be denied. Even if it can be rife with blendings of viola and feedback.

The Velvet Underground didnt suck, yes some posers overrate them but they were a great band. The Nico album was great but Heroin wasn't their best song, either Run,run, run or Their she goes Again was.
I will admit Lou's solo stuff was better though, the whole New York album was great.

Love will tear us apart is probably one of the greatest songs ever written, without a shadow of doubt.

Keep in mind the only music around at the time was The Carpenders, The Osmonds, or Credance Clear Water. Then tell me they suck lol
I agree with Clenched Fist, Transformer transformed rock. Along came Iggy. The New York Dolls and TREX. I think that says it all.

Come on people! Velvet Underground are brilliant. I won't argue that they were overrated, but they were good! "All the songs I've heard are mediocre and boring." What's wrong with mediocre? And it's only yourself that makes it boring...

That is of course if you ignore that at the same time artists like the Beatles, the Who, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, the Kinks, Cream, Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Jethro Tull and many others. All of which were better than the VU.
And CCR was MUCH better than the VU.

I dont agree that the VU was the best band of the late 60s, but it was easily one of the most influential and groundbreaking bands since maybe Chuck Berry or something.
And Jethro Tull is mad over rated, homes.
Total lack of diversity.

I’ll give you one link which should show you some of the complexity beneath the Velvet Underground–and you should look up John Cale in connection with La Monte Young, and not be so ignorant of the things you make judgements on.
Link: http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ehansen/VU/sisray.html
their songs are too repetitive
And go fuck yourself for this comment.

I love Lou Reed solo, but I highly disagree.
I just feel that there are so many levels of fucking ridiculously ignorant ideas on the Velvet Underground in this thread that my head may bust in a few seconds.

And maybe you should be generally skull-fucked for this bullshit response.
