HAVANA - Cuban President Fidel Castro expressed condolences for the death of Pope John Paul II and declared three days of official mourning on the communist-run island beginning Sunday.
The official bell ringer at Havana's towering cathedral rang the church's bells every half hour in John Paul's honor, and a funeral Mass for the pope was to be celebrated at the cathedral Monday evening by Cardinal Jaime Ortega, the island's top Roman Catholic official.
The Cuban flag was to fly at half-staff on public buildings and military installations for three days, and several events, including anniversary celebrations for communist organizations and baseball games, were suspended.
The decree praised the pope for all of his efforts "in favor of solutions for many social ills affecting humanity," as well as for publicly criticizing four decades of U.S. trade sanctions against Cuba.

I agree. I mean if I were in a position with practically unlimited wealth and unlimited power I'd do great things too. I didn't know his policies against condoms in Aids ravaged areas. His beliefs helped contribute to a lot of damage.
And they took over all my favourite shows with his life story crap! I was pissed  .

Fair play to Castro, he must realise his people feel for the man, no matter what communist doctrine says, why can't people mourn the passing of their religious leader? Regardless of his faults, he did a lot of good too.

Tell me people... wouldn't castro send a message of condolences to America on 'behalf of the Cubans' if bush dies?
I think that is the statesman Castro. Not the revolutionary one who sent a message to the Vatican.
Besides, wasn't JPII the only pope that ever visited Cuba... I think he deserves a message.

He was a champion for world peace, and spoke out on Abortion and Euthanasia, whether or not you agree with him is up to you, but who cares. That post was as ignorant as one I would expect from Ian Paisley.

What the bloody fuck are you talking about???
Oh, I know, he sold off some of the Church's obscene plunder to "feed the poor"...except he didn't do that, did he?
In fact, he personally never sacrificed a motherfucking thing for the poor, did he?!
Or do you mean he just ran his fat mouth "about the poor"?
So does Bono...who gives a fuck!

He was a champion for world peace...
Yeah, look at all the wars he stopped. First there was...and then there was...and don't forget the war in...???
No...he stopped no wars at all, did he? But he yapped about peace a lot.
In fact, yap was the one thing he was really good at.
...and spoke out on Abortion and Euthanasia, whether or not you agree with him is up to you, but who cares.
Yeah...on the reactionary side of the issues.
In fact, pretty much every time he every opened his fat mouth he was on the reactionary side of every issue, wasn't he?
What a guy! What a great loss to humanity! How will we go on without him!
You two guys need to pull your heads out of your asses and take a hard look at the reactionary nature of religion.
Especially its "leaders".

Well he opposed liberation theology, the closest thing you will get to socialism in religion.
He also constantly reminded people in S. America to avoid Marxist analysis's of the world etc.
Although I think Castro is most likely appeasing people, a lot of South Americans are very religious, the way we used to be. I'm shocked to say the least, disgusted but I can see why although, hmmm...

Well what other way is there to promote peace, fight for it? You are all quick to judge but you all know you could not have done ny better.

Great! While the CNN propaganda says the Pope played great part in destroying communism. :marx: A message by Castro could have been enough but not giving honor to this person who is a rabid anti-communist!

The pope was the head of the Catholic Church and as guilty as the rest of them. Champion of world peace bollocks. What about the catholic churches silent consent to the slave trade, or platform of non involvement during the holocaust? One down only a few million to go.

Um, the Eastern European countries were about as un-communist as youcan get. The Pope may have advised against Marxist analyses in South America, but he probably had absolutly no idea what communism actually is.
Being a theocrat and all, he would have been against communism, but he did nothing to stop us.
Besides, its debatable as to whether Castro actually is a communist.
Despite the fact that we hate him and what he stood for, Castro has done nothing wrong in mourning his death - anything else would have been completely out of touch with the people.

Castro is just being a statesman by sending his condolences to the vatican since communism in Cuba has failed to eliminate the appeal of the Catholic church among the people in Latin america in general. Castro is just doing it for appearances so are most of the nations of the world just because the neocons in america have painted him as a champion of 'american values'.
You and i both know that the vatican is about as useful as a pimple on the ass! ignored when their views conflict with the imperialist agenda but canonized when they agree. The Catholic church is an important tool in the imperialist arsenal for controlling and exploiting the people's emotions and convictions.

I think we need to understand that the world sometimes is not a black and white place....I believe Fidel has a point in sending best wishes to Rome and the Catholic Church. Fidel has always maintained that he was a religious person...
Socialism does not infer you HAVE to be anti-religious.
The vatican is a fairly exploitive group, and I do see them as a problem. They can take responsability to the spread of AIDs and other STD in the early 80's for their anti-contraceptive stance in Africa and elsewhere.
