Everyone seemed to list most of mine, which is a good thing I guess lol. But here they are for me: SOAD, RATM, Mudvayne, Fear Factory (although they're classified as industrial? ), Mushroomhead, Coal Chamber, Hed PE, Kataklysm, Rammstein, Superjoint Ritual, Pantera... There are others, but those are the ones I have the most songs of probably.

King Crimson has been often considered prog-metal.
They rock.

I do listen to more heavy metal then that, but my god Slayer is awesome. It's fast drums, fast guitars, solo's, normal voice and always very interesting. This is one of the few bands of which I like the vast majority of songs. Never bored with Slayer. It's anti-Christ text are also very enjoyable :P
Jesus Saves
You go to the church, you kiss the cross
You will be saved at any cost
You have your own reality
Christianity
You spend your life just kissing ass
A trait that’s grown as time has passed
You think the world will end today
You praise the lord, it’s all you say
Jesus saves, listen to you pray
You think you’ll see the pearly gates
When death takes you away
For all respect you cannot lust
In an invisible man you place your trust
Indirect dependency
Eternal attempt at amnesty
He will decide who lives and dies
Depopulate satanas rise
You will be an accessory
Irreverence and blasphemy
(lead: king)
Jesus saves, no need to pray
The gates of pearl have turned to gold
It seems you’ve lost your way
(lead: hanneman)
Jesus saves, no words of praise
No promised land to take you to
There is no other way

I have to agree with Non-Sectarian Bastard there! Those guys are geniuses. Slayer has to be the greatest thrash metal band to ever exist, period. :D They fused the gap between metal and a lot of the hardcore punk that was coming around during the 80's.

Or perhaps it is that you do not understand heavy metal?
If you don't like the sound, sure. That is your taste of music.
But by attacking the hair of a stereotype (or even by using a stereotype), you are attacking the culture, to which it is unlikely you understand.
Think about it.

Maybe, but that image of a socialist loving metal and having long hair pisses me off, and the fact that there are lots of leftists who like it makes it easier for others to stereotype us.

Cannibal Corpse are shockingly bad, and you can't here what the asshole is singing about. I've looked at the lyrics however and they are shit, it simply a moron babbling about mutilated bodies.
Cannibal corpse have the musical talent of a cat with its arse sowed up.
They only reason they are popular us because kids think that they are hard core if they listen to shite, which is why bands like Slip Knot also get popular.
Rant over.
The best Metal band in my opinion is Tool, or at least the metal band I listen too most.

If you don't like metal don't post here. If you're gonna be ignorant, arrogant elitist stereotypical assholes then just don't bother posting in a metal topic and leave us in peace.
Anyways, here're mine:
1)Megadeth - one of my all time fave bands and amazing live
2)Pantera - RIP Dimebag, a classic thrash band and beloved of many, give them a real chance and you'll love them
3)Iron Maiden - Best cheesy metal band ever, such brilliance!
4)Dream Theater - the only prog band I've really gotten into, just listen to The Killing Hand and you'll fall in love
Some other ones I like but not as much are (in no order):
Machinehead
Metallica
Black Sabbath
DragonForce
Children Of Bodom
Anyways, I suggest to all the idiots who posted here flaming metal to go out and buy Megadeth - Youthanasia, Rust In Peace and Pantera - Reinventing Hell

I have been into Metal for years, and i think I have a pretty good idea about what Metal I like.
In my opinion, all the best Metal bands have good singers. The best Metal band on the scene right now, in my opinion is tool, and MJK is one of the best singers in Rock.
But then again, a lot of metal is rubbish, I have found my self listening to a lot of prog/alt/indie rock of late.

pre-black album Metallica
Couldn't agree more - that album was the beginning of the end of Metallica (though Enter Sandman is one of the best songs they have ever done, despite the lame repeat-to-fade ending).
At the moment I am into the heavier end of the heavy metal spectrum - there's nothing like a bit of good old screaming on a record. Slipknot's first album is just brilliant!
At the moment Children of Bodon, Fear Factory, Drowning Pool, and Shadows Fall are all sounding good at full volume on my stereo, but by far the best band of the moment has to be Trivium!
Man they rock (go on their website and watch the video to Pull Harder On The Strings Of Your Martyr ;) ), and I am so glad i've got tickets to see them next fortnight! :D

Slipknot "heavier end"? I don't think so.. It's just bland elevator-rock. The heavier end can be found somewhere within brutal death metal (the more technical bands can be good, while the simpler stuff is often quite boring noise), grindcore and some other styles with hardcore influences.

As with your comment to "goth", the elements and influence of electronica and industrial must be recognised. Firstly, in their own right, they are the mosty dace-worthy music in existence. Hell, that is what they are for. Then the elements of these two genres can make it possible to dance to metal-type music.
Kinda reminds me of when I was at a KMFDM concert the metalheads moshed, while the goths (and other less dogmatically rough people) danced.
I did both. :)

Okay, to everyone who has been *****ing on about how much rap sucks or how much metal sucks I think you should all be ashamed (although the metalheads to a much lesser degree). Oh, and the dude who called whoever a "homo" can fuck himself right off this forum, and when you decide to come out of the closet I'm sure I could hook you up with another dumbass arrogant pop-rap fanboy. Anyways, on a much less agressive note I think that respect and equality is the foundation of communism and to a similar extent anarchism, so we should all be open to different music styles. I like both genres (although I by far prefer metal and own only 2 or 3 rap cds while my metal collection is ever growing). IMPO if you hate metal, don't post on a metal topic, just like those of us who don't like rap won't post on rap topics.
Oh, and the idea of not being able to dance to metal is ludicrous, what about the ART of moshing? Or the immortal air guitaring, in fact, if you ever listen to some REAL rap like Zearle you'll find it incredibly hard to dance to. And for anyone associating goth with metal in an offensive manner, go and learn your history! Goth evolved right out of punk and many people see Joy Division the founders of goth (shortly followed by The Cure and Siouxsie And The Banshees joined in later as their sound developed). Both rap and punk have very similar ideas (less of a focus on the music, more on the lyrics). So I think you're being arrogant by loving rap while hating goth.
Either way, nothing beats a good old mosh out to This Love by Pantera.

Well put, I myself enjoya lot (emphesis on lot) of punk bands, but find Megadeth far more satisfying to listen to, but still, your opinion and that's cool with me! I agree with the break dancing/epilepsy idea...I mean, if we all break danced to our music then New Order would beat us up and we'd probably end up spinning into each other causing the deaths of many innocent metalheads.
lol yay death to the metal heads :P but nah seriously many of my friends are metal/ punk kids and they a great people

LOL Some of my close friends are pretty into metal and punk but don't really fit into the category. Did you get the New Order thing? For anyone who didn't here's the run-down:
New Order rose from the ashes of Joy Division, who's lead singer (Ian Curtis) had really bad epilepsy (would have fits on stage) and hung himself in 1980. So New Order would be pissed if we were all acting like we were having an epileptic fit...
Anyways, back on the subject: Rock on with whatever you listen to, but let others do the same.

Narmeen, did you by any chance see the topic title, it says: Heavy Metal
Now unless I'm very much mistaken, techno is not heavy metal.
You're free to start a techno thread if you want.

I started listening to metal in the middle/late 80's. I only know of Slayer and have seen them twice. I want to see them again, any Scottish shows? Haven't heard of any of the other bands.
