Check out this book on speed reading. I recommend it. The author urges you to use a "regulator" as you read. Very simple: Use your index finger or a pen (with the top on the point so you will not write on your book). As you read move your regulator underneath the sentence from left to right in order to regulate your reading and help eliminate regression and subvocalization. Nice investment

Speed reading became a trend when JFK was in office. He was a speed reader. I believe he could read something like over 1,000 words a minute.
Too bad trends like that will never exist again. You know, trends that can actually help you.

Actually it was said that JFK could read 2,000+ words per minute but according to the author of the book I gave a link to no one can speed read over 900-1,000 words per minute. What they are actually doing is skimming. Check this out

I've read studies that have said speed reading can only allow you to understand just as much as you do when you skim through a book. Sure you read faster, but you do not comprehend as much.

I would be lying if I said I could speed read, in the way described earlier in the thread. However I do an awful lot of reading as part of my studies, and you pick up techniques of reading entire chapters very quickly. It is very easy if you know what you are looking for, and looking to take in.
This means in effect you can read a whole book in a matter of hours, and gain any necessary material which you need for study, to the same extent as if you had read the whole book. You learn to spot what you are looking for, and when you do it more you get better at it. However I could never do this for a novel, only with factual information.
But I would not claim this to be speed reading, just proficient skimming.

Actually....
JFK could only read at half the speed people said he could. They stated 1600 wpm...it was about 800.
Still quick, but not the fastest.

I can actually speed read not at 1000 words a minute but at a fairly swift pace with a marker.

Speed reading is not or should not be desirable as it removes the joy of reading, reducing it to a emotion-less and cheapened level of entertainment. But could've been good for studies...if only it had worked. I used to know someone who bragged about this, but, hey....You DON'T -read- it like really renembering it and shit.

Yeah I can read fairly fast at this point coming out of a 4 year Arts/Humanities degree in loaded reading courses of English and Philosophy. You can pretty much comprehend anything at a fast speed if you are doing it daily, I've freaked myself out sometimes in the library studying for an essay, starting a chapter and then suddenly finding Ive finished it. I usually retain a good amount but I also leave markers of dots on anything that is considered important which helps obviously.
