Here's an idea that popped into my head, I decided to bring it to life.
You could probably do better though.

can't see it
See, I told him he should have used an open standard.. heheh.
PNG for life (although PNG doesn't support layers, I'm under the impression PCX does, not that it matters for the two you would have in there).

PCX is a kind of archaic open standard.. I used it a lot in making old dos games in pascal. It uses a 256 pallette, if I recall it correctly, and the only compression it uses is RLE encoding.
I've not used pcx since the 90s, though.. so they could've added a lot to the standard, including layers (it didn't have them before; you had to use the "fixed table in a single layer" type of algorithm to make animations with it, store sprites, etc).. I was actually under the impression that nobody really uses pcx anymore, though. Perhaps I was wrong.
But novelgentry's right: PNG all the way. Lossless compression, transparency (and opacity, unlike gif.. I think that's the right word), RGB or indexed.. the only thing it's missing are layering capabilities, as far as I can tell. Plus, it's an actual open standard, something lacking in the media department (at least in popularity).
I was actually pretty disappointed that you can't use png as an image format on this forum, as all of my images are stored as png for the most part.. I don't suppose there's anything you could do about that, is there, NovelGentry? heh.
Not like it'd matter much to anyone but myself.

It wouldn't matter if you all had a decent image viewer like IrfanView.
You guys must be using something pretty pathetic if you can't see PCX...

firefox won't view it on its own, I believe that's what people mean when they say they can't see it.. I might be wrong, but I think windows reads pcx files without any 3rd party software.
