The Downside to Virginity Pledges

Young people who make pledges of virginity begin having sex later and have fewer sexual partners. But oddly they are infected with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) just as often, a new study found.

"We were surprised by the findings," said Hannah Bruckner, assistant professor of sociology at Yale University. "Pledgers have fewer sex partners than non-pledgers, they start having sex later, and they marry earlier, so they should have lower STD rates, but they don't."

The results are detailed in the March 18 issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health.

Other findings in the study:

* Among virgins -- those who have not had vaginal intercourse -- male pledgers are four times more likely to have anal sex

* Male and female pledgers are six times more likely to have oral sex than non-pledgers.

On an ammusing related note, I read a study done in . . . er . . . Colorado (I think) that revealed teens who'd recieved abstinence-only education were not only as likely to be sexually active, but much more likely to not use even the simplest forms of protection.

As far as I can tell, pretty much any young adult who thinks they can repress their sexuality is, well, simply wrong. Any authority or educator who thinks they can repress a young adult's sexuality is not just wrong, but irresponsible.

polygamy can be traced back to the apes. monogamy was required by the humans to work as a co-operative community.

however, the ape-instinct is still there, so human males developed ways of dampening the sexual urges to mate with every available females (and vice-versa); covering of the genitals, prohibition of 'touching' others etc. curtailing the urges was required to keep the commuity co-operative; males fighting for females just was not acceptable if the species were to survive.

pledging virginity is unatural and as redstar has pointed out, in some ways meaningless. the only reason we 'keep ourselves' is because, when contraception wasnt around, girls couldnt go around getting pregnant because, even though they were physically prepared, they weren't prepared to actually mother due to societies 'slowing' down the learning process. so, girls were encouraged to 'wait' untill they were married, and older, before they had sex.

in modern times though, young people are able to safely experiment with sex. but still, polygamy is safe ONLY in the realm of the experimenting teenager.

I read an article in CosmoGirl! about this. These Christian kids who were pledging abstinence were getting more STDs because Christians teens are just as horny, if not hornier, and do cave in to temptation. However, when they do, they don't know how to protect themselves cus all they've been taught is abstinence.

Yeah, but I'd say monogamy might exist mostly because of the ruling class establishing that in order for the "alpha males" to keep their whole harem away from the rest of the males in society. This might have been the case thousands of years ago.
Does anyone have any link about this kind of stuff? If I could prove that all this "sex laws" were created by the ruling class, then our whole civilization will experience a big revolution.

im hoping to only have a couple of partner in my life time... i don't know... i haven't been doing it for a long long time but these times i have done it... had sex it didn't seem all it's crank-up to be... i was dissapointed... that or my partner isn't that good... i can't tell because i've only had one partner...

Wow that's a shit idea, unless your aim was to spread STDs as much as possible. Besides, many individuals simply wouldn't want the whole community having sex with their single love. Its simply immoral, your completely ignoring the individual loving individual aspect of society.

Ug - enough grand statements - sex is a matter entirely for those having sex. Whether it is with a single partner, multiple partners, whateva - is neither bourgeois nor proletarian - its humans. While there are political/ideological elements within current society, it should be our goal to wash them away completely!
