I personally think that Elvis sucked, not because the music was bad some of it was actually fairly enjoyablebut all of his hit songs had been written and performed by black musicians. All the songs had moderate popular to selected audiences but when a marketable white boy comes along and sings them they become the most popular songs of that generations and several generations later.
So does Elvis suck or not suck?

Nobody can doubt the influence of Elvis. He had a superb voice and one of the greatest stage presences ever. He had some great songs, some average ones and some terrible ones. I personaly like a lot of his stuff. Really though, it doesn't matter if he sucked or not, he is, and always will be, a legend...

...and a fucking hack.
Ever bother to question why he's a legend?
I was just looking at his 30 #1 Hits album on amazon.com, and at least the first 5 tracks on that disc were not written by him. Not only did he borrow his material, he borrowed the entire style. He was anything but original and innovative.
He's a legend because (1) he was white, unlike the rock musicians that came before him and (2) he got some catchy tunes written and performed by his black contemporaries and used his sex appeal to be successful, because frankly, his music was nothing new.
Fuck Elvis.

Lots of pop stars don't write there own songs. Does that mean they're necessarily take away their validity as performers? How many other people have the level of stage presence and charisma Elvis had? I can think of Freddie Mercury and hardly anyone else...

Yes. Britney Spears is famous just because he looks "sexy" and he sings "well". Nothing else. Why should Birntye Spears be more popular than, say, Peter Gabriel?
How many other people have the level of stage presence and charisma Elvis had? I can think of Freddie Mercury and hardly anyone else...
Yeah, but Freddie Mercury would write songs.
The only good thing about Elvis was his voice. As I said, I can't say if he "sucked", since he was probably important back then. But not anymore.

Britney Spears is famous just because he looks "sexy" and he sings "well". Nothing else.
The exact same can be argued of the Beatles especially in their early days, and anybody who denies the brilliance of the Beatles is just plain incorrect, and their petty opinion can be discounted, on all subjects. By disliking the Beatles you forfit the right to an opinion... on anything.

Choosing Tom Jones over anything, even the noise emitted from a cat with its arse sowed up, automatically means that any opinion you have had, or ever will have stricken from history. Your right to an opinion has just been revoked. ;)

That's really fuckin weak.
I love The Beatles, but I can easily see how someone could dislike their music.
And they were never thought to have been sexy.
And even in their first two album, "Please Please Me" and "With the Beatles" both of which had a lot of covers, also had a lot of original material. "Beatles for Sale" also had some covers, but again, with plenty of original material.
However, I do believe that a great musician may not be a great songwriter. That's okay. Eric Clapton is a very mediocre songwriter, but he's a great guitarist who has put out great music. I'm not personally a fan of most of his post-Cream work. Most of it was either below-par covers of great bluesmens' songs or cookie-cutter 70s pop. (There are a few exceptions.) Even though he was not a great songwriter, Cream was still quite innovative.
Speaking of which, Clapton turns 60 today.
Elvis, however, was nether a good songwriter or an innovator.
Fats Domino and Chuck Berry had done the same thing, but better years before. His style and his music were stolen. Excuse me, he did come up with the pelvis thrust. (Or was that stolen from Forrest?)

1. Elvis DID suck.
2. The music was written to BE preformed by a variety of different musicians. When it was written, it was no more intended to belong to anybody then "God Save the Queen" or "Cotton Eye Joe".
It was understood among the musicians who preformed such songs that the music belonged to the listener, and the preformer was simply the middleman, whom had the satisfaction of comparing him/herself to other greats who already did their own version.
Think of a Shakespearian play.
Who owns them? Nobody, really.
Who preforms them? Anyone who wants to.
Elvis was the same. Elvis was just an actor who wanted to play a part.
The songwriters were Shakespear. They wrote the songs for money, and couldn't care less who used them.
The only thing that Elvis did differently was preform while being white, attracting white audiences, bringing that type of music to the foreground.
Elvis didn't steal anything. . .he just borrowed.
The reason he sucks is because he wasn't very good.
He got a lot of hype because he was a white boy who introduced a whole genre of music to the (white) public that previously had been only done by black musicians.

You LOOSE!!! all of those guys have way better stage presence than Elvis. And to name a few more: Joe Strummer, Bob Marley, Tosh, Bunny, Joe Hill, Elvis Costello, Pete Townshend. They all put on better shows than Elvis... AC/DC even. KISS! Can't stand em' but Simmons and whatever his name is are better frontmen than Elvis. Lets see... ohh yeah Bruce Springsteen. Even in his own time period Elvis wasn't the greatest. Chuck Berry owned him.

No actually the only reason prople can use God save the Queen and perform Shakespeare is because the copyright laws have expired. Many of the songs Elvis performed were very personel songs that talked about their hardships, Elvis didn't have any hardships.
When some of the artists that wrote Elvis' music tried to release albums they would be sewed by Elvis' record label because he bought the rights to their songs.

Wait a second...this is like a "deja vu"...is this the second time you relate the Beatles with Britney Spears or I'm hallucinating?
The Beatles COULD write songs. Their respect is not built on stupid female teenagers screaming, it comes from music critics, musicians, etc.
Not from 12 years old girls who bought "Please Please Me". Besides, Britney is 100% advertising, 0% music.
The individuals who came up with albums such as Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's, Abbey Road and the white album were not called "Elvis Presley" or "Britney Spears".
And by the way, their "early era" was their worst. Their greatest stuff came out after 1965.
