Someone please tell me that this is a joke. TIPS was bad enough, but linking it to the profit-driven interests of a corporation is obscene.
Read All About It (http://www.commondreams.org/news2002/0806-03.htm)
Can things get any stranger?
Maybe it's a hoax. Let's hope so.

This article is completely lost on me. What's Operation TIPS.

TIPS seeks to have ordinary citizens, like postal workers, cable installers, gas and water meter readers, call a national hotline to report "suspicious" activity to aid the fight against terrorism. Many civil rights groups, rightly, I think, see it as nothing more than a domestic spying program that opens the door to very serious abuses.

Fucking hell. This is unreal. I was hoping Bush's little plan wouldn't get much attention. I swear, this is becoming 1984.

Michael,
I hear ya.
This is another instance, I think, of the ruling class feeding off of each other. We already know the booksellers now have to provide lists of items you've purchased upon request thanks to the Patriot Act. How long before that's tied in to TIPS? Perhaps there could be a reading list where certain books are flagged, so if you buy the Manifesto using a credit card, you get your name on a government computer.
The Bush presidency has so far been one of giveaways to the rich and decreased spending on the rest of us. Now, in addition to the economic attack against the worker, there is an attack on civil liberties.
Where are the Democrats?
Perhaps their feeding at the same Big Money trough.

I hate to quote him but it fits.

I'd hate to live in America.
Ya know, I've never thought too much of the TIPS program. That was until I read that last link. I think I'm going to vomit. My stomach is uneasy and my pulse is racing. How can they do this to us??????? I am still trying to convince myself that this is all made up. That link was not real--it was just some leftie propaganda, right? Come on, tell me, please, this is all a joke.....right????!!!!

There are absolutely no restrictions or guidelines for the TIPS program to go about. Which means, your TV repair man can come into your house, look through your shit, and report to the government that he found the Communist Manifesto lying in your bookshelf and an upside down American flag on your wall, as well as any anti-Bush books. Suspicious behaviour. Terrorist behaviour. I read somewhere that Ashcroft is also toying with the idea of putting cameras in public places, which really blew my mind.
