View Full Version : Comrade BNS's Music Corner

hey,
I haven't been on the forums in long long time. I get back here, and the music section is OVERRUN by "This is shit", "I don't like that type of music", "My music is better then your's" shite threads.
Far from being absolutely pointless and completely subjective, they are too negative.
So anyway, I decided to start my own music corner thread, since I'm really into alot of music of many many different styles and backgrounds.
I want this thread to be a continuing section of the forums where we can all discuss and share our positive experiences and tastes in music. In a completely positive and relaxed manner
So if you're even thinking of posting something like "Emo sucks" or "Rap is gay" then don't...leave now and be spared my contempt. *Note: Emo and rap aren't my thing personally, but please feel free to post about either of the two, so long as it's positive/constructive*
And just to prove that I really am egalitarian, I won't control this thread, I want this to be for all of us. I simply would like to be the facillitator of conversation. That being said, this is a thread for EVERYONE. I don't want any admin shit coming in here, like "do what I say fuckers, I'm admin" or "my oppinion is better because I'm in a commie club [oxy-moron anyone?]"
so all that out of the way, come on in. Take it easy. And let's talk, share or whatever's clever.
Peace and goodnight

Also got some old school los lobos the other day which is awesome, stuff like Guantanamera and Tequilla.
oh and ermm...Erhu music. It's the shit I tell you! Anyone else stuck on the song Jia Ren Qu from the house of flying daggers? Mei sings it in the Peony Pavillion.

why would anybody want to listen to low-fidelity sound quality? And how is this a genre of music?

'lo-fi' music is the SHIT!! it has a much more authentic feel to it, over-production is never an issue in 'lo-fi' recording. If artists like Ali Farka Toure weren't reasonably lo-fi they would lose their authenticity, and I think Ali has the sense to recognise that. He's a really really really cool guy, I can't get enough of his stuff!
Mali in general seems to have some amazing artists and has a fascinating history and culture, steeped in music, dance and art.
If you don't know them check out Habib Koite and Tinariwen....really cool stuff!
Habib's beautiful west african melodies should be enough to attract you to him, and I loathe to have to appeal to such base interests, but he has also been likened by many blues guitarists as the next big thing. And I quote "First there was Hendrix, then Stevie Ray, and now Habib!"

I listened to him for a bit, but then you realize the massive ripoff he is. Nick Drake really defined that kind of folk trend I think -- not saying the whole folk trend, but that end of it.
Note, I'm not saying he sucks... Jack Johnson is actually fairly good -- just fairly unoriginal.
If you like that though check out: Lou Barlow, Iron & Wine, and of course as stated Nick Drake.

I have heard alot of Nick Drake....I don't really see the connection myself though, except that they both play the guitar, sing and write songs. Nick Drake in my oppinion is waaaay more melancholy and fits more into the indie/underground sotf-core and folk scene (think Devendra banhart, The clientelle etc.) Jack is more just like...hmm....surf folk I guess. But that's just my oppinion...and in my oppinion there is no 'ripping-off'. If a style is copied, it's fairly obvious and thus pays homage to the original spark and idea...but even a reproduced idea is never the same and expands, breaking new ground...so creativity is still there. How many of your ideas and thoughts are purely imaginative and unexplainable in their origin? Of course almost ALL of your ideas come from expanding on previous thoughts and notions.

P.S. Anyone else liking Buju Banton "The Voice of Jamaica"?
