Here is how Canada's wealthiest province with a right wing government treats the majority.
Worst labour laws in Canada strike again
Finnings actions tantamount to union busting NDP
Edmonton NDP Opposition critic Ray Martin sharply criticized Finning Canada today, as the company laid off some 260 people in the past year, including 70 people just two weeks ago. Albertas weak labour laws are once again putting profits over people. Big corporations like Finning are profiting off layoffs and union busting, and the Tory government is letting them get away with it, says Ray Martin.
Finning Canadas decision to transfer core business operations to a related company, OEM, is the subject of Labour Relations Board hearing. Finning spent $90 million setting up OEM, and the new company is fully funded by Finning. The union - the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) claims that Finning set up OEM in order to do an end-run around collective bargaining and effectively bust the union.
Finnings actions are clearly designed to undermine workers bargaining strength. These decisions were made with the full knowledge and approval of Finning Canadas board of directors, including Jim Dinning, says Martin.
If this is what Alberta workers have to look forward to under wannabe Premier Dinning, working people are in for a rough ride, continues Martin.
Albertas Human Resources and Employment Minister Mike Cardinal needs to strengthen the Labour Code now, so that more companies dont engage in these union-busting tactics. Our economy is booming, with growing shortages of skilled tradespeople, and workers deserve the best protections in Canada, not the worst, says Martin.
Building a better Alberta starts with treating workers with respect. Jim Dinning and his friends at Finning arent doing workers that courtesy. The minister needs to step in and rework the labour code in this upcoming session of the Legislature, adds Martin.
Labour issues are heating up in Alberta, and this could be the sleeper issue of the spring session. We had 300 layoffs at the Celanese plant last fall, the Building Trades unions are angry and betrayed over union-busting tactics involving the CNRL oil sands project, and now Finning Canadas union-busting tactics are being tolerated by the Tories. Its time this government stopped taking workers for granted, concludes Martin.
