First off, I'm not trying to flood the forums with Bob Marley posts! :D
This weekend, there was a Bob Marley celebration at my school (Ohio University) to commerate Bob Marley's birth, and Black History Month. It was a great time. There was poetry, dancing, free food, and best of all Reggae music!
The band that played there (I unfortunately forget their name) had been together for 20+ years, and had, get this, actually opened for Bob Marley! They had also opened for Peter Tosh, Ziggy Marley, and Shaggy.
Their music was great, and it was an awesome experience. They played some originals, and a some Marley as well. There were many Jamaicans and people from the Caribbean in attendance. There was even a booth selling Yerba Mate (which reminded me of Che). It was some of the best music I've heard all year.-
Also, has anyone heard the Bob Marley CD "Chant Down Babylon"? It's a CD that came out in '99 and has Marley playing with a bunch of hip-hope artists (arranged post-humously). I think it was mixed and produced by one of Marley's sons as well. I guess it was intended to send his message to African-Americans who weren't hugely exposed to his music during his lifetime. Anyone who is even a slight fan of Bob should check it out.

Bob Marley is stupidly over rated. Sure he had a few good songs, like most succesful artists, but people give him an almost god like status. Personally I can think of lots of artists I prefer.

How right you are. The cult of Bob Marley is stupid. I know some people like his music, But giving him a god-like- status is crazy.
I have to mention I like only one song of his, No Woman No Cry, nothing else. I think there was a fest celebrating him on Ethiopia few weeks ago, How stupid.

I think it was inspired by the tribute concert that a bunch of rap artists covered his songs and thus made a remix album.

Enigma and Eagle, why?
Why waste our forum space with your petty arogant 'artiste' attitudes?
No one gives a shit! If you like him cool, if not also cool. But fuck why tell everyone about it? stop the whole "My god *ahem* 'preferred artist' is better then yours" bullshit

Listen up BNS, this is what is called a discussion board. Discussion involves two sides of an argument, if everyone had the same view, it would be shit. I would also ask you to quote in the rules of the board, where I cannot make a perfectly legitimate statement. However I know for a fact that it doesn't exist, so I won't bother.

ok dude. Here's the deal.
Make your 'perfectly legitimate statements' all you want. But honsetly I personally don't think that, in this thread at least, they are adding any weight to the conversation.
Note: I was alot harsher in my previous post, but I saw you quoted me in your signature. So you obviously do have some credentials! :P
So for a man/woman with 'some credentials' take my advice and move beyond the petty meanderings of oppinion. The world is overflowing with fucking oppinions, and not with people actually making a difference. It's all "I think Bush should...", "I think Bush is to blame..." and no "let's shut the fuck up and stop pontificating and actually do some shit for people who need it"...but that's just my humble oppinion :P

You were talking but all I was hearing was 'Waaa Waaa Waa'.
Just stop with the arrogant attitudes and whinging about shit no really gives a flying fuck about. I don't like toast, I'm allowed to not like toast, and I'm allowed to TELL YOU that I don't like toast. But telling you serves no purpose except to waste each other's time.
So please feel free to make you 'perfectly legitimate statements' and I'll feel free to call you a time wasting bastard in a Bernard Black-esque way.
Comrade BNS
Well done that sure is a pile of incoherant nonsense, from an individual who watches too much Dylan Moran.

I think it was inspired by the tribute concert that a bunch of rap artists covered his songs and thus made a remix album. Ya probably, most tribute concerts aren't worth going to. I went to a sublime one the other night... it was shit

Bob was cool, overrated? Perhaps, but no way was he shit. He's definitely been portrayed as an idol, and people do tend to idolize the man...but his music wasn't shit. It was the mainstream finally listening to the ghetto - Bob was just one of many acts similar to him...if it weren't him, it would've been someone else with the almost identical message but a different face.
If you wanna critique his music fine...but at least add some subsistence to your argument. So far, arguments against him in this post are pretty stupid.
Do the music its justice. Give your reasons for your stance.

I love Bob Marley's music. He helped make reggae what it is today. His music brings people together, what does your music do?

It's great that you're into Bob Marley, but He DID NOT, repeat DID NOT "help make reggae what it is today". Jamaican music is a funny phenomenon, without Bob Marley and the wailers, Jamaican music would have gone the same way regardless and in some other way covered the ground that the Wailers broke without ever 'needing' a figure like Bob.
However, his emergence is dearly loved and enjoyed by *dare I say it* all lovers of Jamaican music, and his place in Jamaican music history is a special one. He wasn't a necessary element of Reggae's progression, but a welcome and much loved one none the less!
