Not to be overly negative, but all political parties are, ultimately, part of the problem. While the parties you mentioned might have appealing features (not being American, I can't speak to either specifically), it is important to understand that, in the end, real social change will not occur within the confines of the rules of that system which you seek to radically change. Simply put, buying into the system is never the way to overthrow the system.

"Has not the experience of two centuries shown that gradualism in theory is perpetuity in practice? Is there an instance, in the history of the world, where slaves have been educated for freedom by their task-masters?"

Word man. That does make sense. but i mean if you wanted to get together with fellow socialist/communist then that would be a great place to congregate, but true, the only way to overthrow the system is if the people want it. I don't think voting someone in would necessarily work. there are alot of brainwashed people in this country.

Why do you have to join a party to be with fellow commies or socialists? What about other groups/organizations that are not on a ticket?

The "Communist" Party USA is an extremely reactionary, revisionist party. Just a few weeks ago there was a thread on them in which Flyby said some important stuff which you should read, here's the thread: http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php?showtopic=32940

The Social Democratic Party is probably not much better--from what I've read, they supported Nixon and Reagan when they were presidents, and many of their former members are now in the Bush administration (although this was coming from the dogmato-revisionists at E-G, who always make up stupid shit about Trotskyites, so who knows the validity of that...)

Like the others I don't see why you have to join a party. But if you did, are these your only two choices? Or are they your top ones? I would join neither one of these parties. As 1949 said, the CPUSA is a reformist party, it says so on their website. I also read part of their constitution and they have hierarchal party structure:

SECTION 2. Each Party body is subordinate to the next higher body, with central authority vested in the National Convention, the highest body of the Party, which not only has the authority to act on all aspects of Party policy and activity, but elects the national leadership to carry through its will and decisions between conventions.

This is their number two goal at the moment apparently:

2. Winning a wide-ranging program of reforms that put the well being of the people before private profits.

That right there should be sufficient to keep you away. Unless you're a reformist?

I don't know much about the Social Democrats, but they're reformist too, so... You get the idea.

You don't have to be part of a party to employ the same ideals they have.
