Yeah, the Mars Volta rock.
Really talented fellas and some kickass music.
When is their new album available?

sometime in march. But since there is a limit to the amount of music they can fit on the album, they are releasing a track called "Frances" as a single.
this is meant to be the first track of their new cd Frances the Mute

I'm not a big fan, nor do I know much of their music, but I have some friends who are really into them. But whenever I hear their music, it seems pretty crazy, trippy, and cool.

Now, somewhere on the internet. I downloaded it (low quality) and while the first track was pretty good, and the second and the fifth were interesting, the other 2 sucked. I give it a 5 out of 10.

Great album.
I really enjoyed it but I hope this doesn't give other people the green light to take drugs, write bizarre songs and then make money.

Ok, I admit it's not that bad. But the third song sounds like the "latin" crap they show on MTV and such channels here. They're obviously far from Santana.
Of course the sound quality sucks so it will of course sound better when it comes out.

I've heard them described as progressive and punk and even hardcore, but never emo.

First off, the Mars Volta aren't EMO. Too cool, and not feminine enough.

I don't know a lot about the band but I think they are from Texas and can speak Spanish. That might have something to do with latin-sounding songs.

I still don't understand what emo is, or how does the Mars Volta (with it's dramatic time changes and 32 minute songs) fits with it.

Yeah it's fucking amazing. Haven't gotten the pleasure of listening to their new album, but I've heard that it's supposed to be inspired by Zeppelin. The first album, which I don't remember the title of since it's so weird, is really something else. It calms me down while it still rocks.

That site also lists Minor Threat, an early hardcore band that could not possibly be called emo. By any standards. That site fucking sucks, understand?

you should judge them yourself, instead of relying on some stupid website.
EMO= whinning about your emotions and how you're unpoplar and your girlfriend dumped you.
At the drive-in (feat. cedric and omar from mars volta, singer and guitarist respectively, )lyrics:
all veins in highway laps
this breath collapsed again
this hex was delivered spent
orchestra influenza
drawn and quartered pets
it dwells and grows
mars volta lyric sample
Open wrist talks back again
In the wounds of its skin
They'll pinprick the witness
In ritual contrition
The am trinity fell upon asphyxia-derailed
In the rattles of...
Made its way through the tracks
Of a snail slouching whisper
A half mass comute through umbilical blisters
Spector will lurk
Radar has gathered
Midnight neuces from boxcar cadavears
Exoskeletal junction at the railroad delayed
EDIT: by "unpoplar" i meant "unpopular" and not the anti-thesis of a certain type of tree (poplar trees)

Umm, I don't think the ban would label themselves anything other than The Mars Volta ... what the hell are labels anyway? Omar (the guitarist) said "we are really tired of those labels and questions. Concept album? How can any huge project that takes up most of your life for a year not have a concept? How can any innovative, forward-thinking art or music not be progressive? It reminds me when I first heard the label 'emo,' which was the most ridiculous label ever. How can anything you put your heart and soul into not be emotional?"
I'm just going to label them as The Mars Volta, that is what I think they would like.
I truly hope that their music brings back realistic prog rock, not synthesizers and so forth, but music that pushes the envelope and so forth, but nor do I want 50 TMV rip-off bands running around out there, as the rest of the music industry seems to thrive on.
For further discussion into this amazing band, have any of you tried to analyze their songs, and figure out just what they are about? I'm talking of the "De-Loused" album, and not "Francis."

I agree. "Emo" is a stupid term. Was Bob Dylan emo? Or John Lennon? Or Roger Waters?

I agree with that too. This reminded me of Marillion: most "prog" "rock" bands nowadays are a bunch of clones of important prog bands, especially of bands like Marillion. And when 99,9% of the bands of a certain genre are a clone of a band which was already a clone (and used even more synths than the band they were copying, which was already very keyboard-based), you know things are going REALLY wrong...
Has anyone hears Asia? They sucked too!
EMO= whinning about your emotions and how you're unpoplar and your girlfriend dumped you.
So Pete Townshend is "emo"? Aw, shit.
This "label" sucks.

I still don't see how mars volta can possibly classified as emo.
Deloused in the comatorium was a concept album chronicling the story of someone named cerpin taxt. He overdoses on heroin and falls into a coma. In the coma he explores phantasmic places and struggles with subconcious forces. He finally comes out of his coma and commits suicide.
I dare you to label that as emo
