Don't know, but many children died of hunger during the 20's when Lenin had the power.

As far as freedom and socialism in action went yes, but russia was in a terrible state, aftter ww1 and what the tsar had done to it.

I'm actually not sure about "during." But I know that after the fall, there was a large spike in the death of orphans.

Not sure if it's attributed to the chaos of the transition, though.
