A commune is a social unit where everyone would 'chip in' with work and maintinance in return for a fair share of resources. To give an example 'Hippy Communes' sprung up occasionally in the late 60s early 70s whereby generally a group of people would attempt to operate a self-sufficient farm and would share out the necesities between themselves. I think I'm right in saying that there's a couple that still exist. Anyway, communism is effectivly a commune on a much bigger scale (country wide if you're a Stalinist, or globably if Trotsky's your man.)

The paris commune was simply an entire city organized in that manner.
The plan was to incite other cities to revolt and build a federation of communes/collectives.
