Get gaim,

its a multi-protocol client that allows you to use your AIM, ICQ, MSN ect. accounts without actually having to download the IM programs theirselves.

I use Trillian, it has the same IM features of GAIM (AIM, ICQ, etc.). THe only problem I have is direct connecting and sending files across it. I have to create a secondary account with AIM to do that.

adium is a good one for any apple owners running X. also, firefox and thunderbird are good free programs too (web browser and e-mail client respectively).
