We all know that spineless Blair acted like Bush's poodle and obeyed his every order, but what if that gutless lapdog actually couldnt have stood up to Bush anyway?
America is bigger than Britain in many ways - land, population, military, wealth, number of nukes etc - and almost always asks Britain for help (the last time a British PM refused was before the Vietnam War) in it's idiotic "world policing" missions.
Does anyone think that Blair could even be able to stand up to Bush and get away with it, even if Blair actually had a backbone and guts?

He wants the UK's support so he can say that more multinational troops are going into Iraq.

Canada "got away" with not officially endorsing the Iraq war, despite the all of the conservative pro-business types running around like the sky was falling.
Although I'm sure it helped that the Bush Administration doesn't seem to notice Canada exists half the time- they are much more focused on their friendship with the UK, especially since they were the "staunch ally" during the Iraq war. Thus having the UK "turn them down" would be a much bigger deal.
Realistically, however, I doubt the US could do anything worse than turning a cold shoulder and maybe pulling a few childish fits ("freedom fries," anyone?). The US could never get away with, say, launching a CIA secret war, or trying to overthrow Blair with a military coup. At least I hope they couldn't :P

The UK has nukes and is able to defend itself, therefore the US will not attack it. Doing so would probably provoke a domestic civil war, ignoring the fact that such a war would probably turn both countries into giant craters. The UK could stand up for itself, but does not do so because it is in the interests of the UK's power elite to be US lackeys. This gives them a more powerful position in the world then they would have otherwise.

You'll notice how nice we are to the nations that could potentially do damage to us. I haven't heard much about American-Pakistani agression since they found out they have the bomb.
As a matter of fact, I haven't much of anything about North Korea.
