I was thinking about trying to go to Cuba this summer, but I live in the US. I was wondering, from people that have been, 1. how do you avoid getting a visa, and 2. what is the cheapest way to go? I'd appreciate the feedback, thanks.

oh boy...I went to Cuba recently. The tourist are 80% Canadian and the rest are europeans and asians...I only saw ONE American there and he came from Canada...Since u asked, i think the cheapest way to go there is to swim there from the state of Florida :D crude but economical. Of course u have to wait for the right tides.
hah. Well the trip is pretty cheap already. My 1 and 1/2 week's stay at a 5 star hotel (Sorry I wasnt exactly "with the people"...) in Varadero cost only 3000 canadian dollars(I think it includes the plane tickets..?My parents paid for it...I hate money...). I would imagine it to be even cheaper if u consider something like a 4 star hotel.
lol sorry i cant be much of a help. I hate numbers, especially when they are printed on bills.

why stop at 2 star hotels? u know, I've seen beggers in Havana. if u look poor enough, im sure u can travel and stay there for as long as u want. Heck, if u are lucky, u might even make enough for the plane ticket back home! :D
sorry for the bad humour...Let's be honest...I dont have anything constructive, really

You can fly through a third country, try to stay away from Mexico and Canada, as there are SEVERAL reports of US agents waiting for Americans to return. You can fly through the Dominican Republic - leaving Santo Domingo on Copa Air, it's around $350 round trip.
You get the visa in the airport in Cuba when you land. They will stamp a piece of paper and put it in your passport, so that when you leave you can throw the piece of paper away and no one in the US will ever know you were in Cuba.
Check around, you may be able to find cheap airfare to a latin american country, with a relatively inexpensive connection to Cuba.
note: to this date, not one single US citizen has been prosecuted for traveling to Cuba.

In all likely hood you will not face any sort of harrassment what so ever in Cuba.

Update on that: It's a nice idea but it's no longer true. In fact, a few months ago a 76 (?) year old woman was being sentenced for committing war crime by "trading with the enemy". She decided that she wanted to spend her 75th b-day bicycling around the island. She got back to the states without any problems until about 6 or 7 months later when she received a court summons (if thats the right word for that kind of crime). From there the shit hit the fan.
There have been multiple convictions in the last 2 years and it's totally unprecedented. Most of it is because of the pseudo-Cuban "refugee's" in Miami.

Show me proof of that. I've heard similar rumors but have not one document to back it up.
