I think the doors are one of the greatest band of the the 60's and early 70's and maybe the past 50 years. I was just wondering, what are you opinions of the Doors, or Jim Morrison?

I don't like The Doors. At all. The keyboard-organ-thing is very annoying.
This gets me into a lot of music fights.

They rocked.
They weren't particularly innovative or anything, but they sure did rock pretty hard.
LA Woman is a work of art. The whole album.

For some reason my reply to this dissapeared.
Anyway, I like them but i don't "love" them, at least not that much as many others. "Strange Days" is their best album, and "LA Woman" their second best, but i haven't listened to their 3rd and 4th (the same about the post-Morrison ones) which seem to be weaker according to what I heard about them. I'll try to get them.
Jim Morrison can bother me ocasionally. And the keyboard thing is ok.

They are a good band. "The end" is a fantastic song it's always good to listen to if your feeling abit paranoid :P Saying that they do often get alot more recognition than they diserve but so do lots of bands TRex for example <_< .

Since I list The Doors as my favorite band in my profile, I felt a little more than compelled to reply to this thread. Personally, I feel that The Doors perfectly embody what was right with music and how it all went horribly wrong. The psychedelic styled sounds of such 60s and 70s bands (The Cream, Iron Butterfly, Jimi Hendrix, etc) have great references and influences. Most obviously, such bands are heavily influenced by the earlier blues genre, but in The Doors especially you can feel a sense of Eastern heritage in the music. The Doors, however, seemed to have been one of the first of such bands to really, truly communicate the pain and loathing found within existence through their music. It was this sense of lyrical endowment that made Morrison the perceived god that he is today. Though I would fault Jim Morrison personally for his many character flaws, as an entertainer, and sometimes even an enlightener, he was certainly high among his peers. As film students, there was always a grand illusion of immersion to the band’s tracks (such as The End, as October Revolution had mentioned, which expertly depicts a generalized Greek tragedy), and less than subtle bouts of surrealism to be found. Despite amusing foibles’ annoyance with the keyboard and organ sounds, I’ve always found the sounds of an organ particularly pleasing (especially in said genre), though I’m also a sucker for cellos, so maybe it’s just a running theme throughout my cerebrum.
For those favoring The Doors, I’d also suggest checking into a little-known band of the same epoch; H.P. Lovecraft. Named after the great American horror writer, the band combines a lot of psychedelic rock basics with a sense of looming fear and cosmic urgency (thus their name).
Edit: I guess I don't list them in my profile... I was thinking of one of the welcoming threads' questionnaires (http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php?showtopic=12465&st=1080) that I filled out. My mistake.

I never really understood why so many people dislike The Doors. I mean everybody has the bands they like, and then the bands they're just not particularly into, but it seems like a lot of people truly dislike their music. I don't get it, I love the Doors. I guess Morrison just rubs some people the wrong way.

Well yes theres that but theres also the fact that their music is just so fucking strange as you can see from the fact pop music is favoured in the US/UK many people would rather listen to soppy crap or Hip Pop (not Hip Hop) than strange mind expanding hippie stuff.

the doors were the best band everrrr and my favorite band still (sometimes). jim morrison was so free and uninhibited and so connected to the primeval aspects of human consciousness that he really understood things deeper than most people. plus, he was at the heart of the hippie drug-culture, and that can't be a bad thing. anyway, THE END is my favorite doors song, and pretty high up there on my favorite songs of all time!

I got over the Doors a long time ago, Morrisons pretentions became hard to stomach. Lizard king, mysticism, mind-expansion bollocks.

The Doors are one of those bands that I have a high respect for, but haven't gotten around to listening a lot of. What's ironic, is that from the bits and pieces I've heard of Morrison's work, Iron Butterfly (a band I'm mildly familiar with) turned me onto playing the keyboards a year ago. :/

The Doors are pretty good. I think they're a bit overrated though (probably due to Jim Morrison's death.)

Definately.
Morrison, bless his soul, was a bit too much of a front-man who is awesome... but not enough to justify over-shadowing the rest of the band.
It is kinda like Kurt Cobain, although Kurt didn't try to.
Being the frontman of a band myself, it is kinda hard not to overshadow the people not talking directly to the crowd. But Jim could have TRIED.

I agree. That was part of the reason for Kurt Cobain's downfall (that and heroin). I'll shut up about Nirvana though because I am a HUGE Nirvana fan (my favourite band by far) and my mates know that if I start on Nirvana I don't shut up! I am kind of the frontman in my band and I do try to 'include' the other guys when I'm speaking directly to the crowd.
