Has anyone heard anything about Marcos since the new year has begun? My friend has also told me that the Zapatista movement in Chiapas is dead.

Is this correct?

A link to news stories regarding the EZLN.

http://news.google.co.uk/news?hl=en&ned=uk&q=EZLN

Seems to me that they are quite at the moment, but not at all dead or dying.

After reading checking the link, I'll think you'll agree...NO.

You haven't been to the Politics Forum, have you? Shame on you! Only joking. ;)
Here's some info that I posted on the EZLN's progress. It's not from the new year, but it's not too old; August 2004.

I haven't really heard anything lately either, but I'm positive that the movement is not dead.

This was so utterly ridiculous a thread it was beyond reason.
One of the main web pages has blown out.
When in Chiapas I was told that certain forces who are dealing with increased paramilitary repression are skeptical about using the internet due to security reasons.

That being said, six caravans to Chiapas left last week from the United States, and a junior high school was just built in Oventic, and they just held elections of regional officers in which six more women were chosed, so no not only are they not dead they are thriving as a symbol of the revival of the Indigenous movement not only in Chiapas, but all through Southern Mexico.

What is happening, is that due to security reasons it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain a server I believe. The only comment I got when I asked about internet was

Considering the kinds of underhanded paramilitary actions that they are having to deal with have a physical address tied to a server with a computer is not good.

You have to remember that they are dealing with truck loads of troops from Mexico City, an entire occupying force of which no one has been prosecuted for unlawful action against a campesino. It is very serious. We don't live under the same level of repression, so it is hard to understand what its like to have someone come into your office with machine gun and raid your files at the drop of a hat and arrest you.

We do face similar crap under the patriot act, but not on such a widespread basis with an actual occupying force right outside our window.

If they have to lay low while increasing the action in the mountains, so be it. We should support them, and believe in them, not whine that they are not active just because they are working quietly to increase schools.
