Guerrilla warfare is a form of warfare used when you are outnumbered by opposing forces but preferably have support of a lot of the population. It can be applied in urban areas as well as rural although it has been practised most in the jungle and other countryside areas in the world. The vietcong (NLF) defeated the US in Vietnam using guerrilla warfare and Fidel Castro liberated Cuba using Guerrilla warfare. It is being used in some parts of the world today.
I think Mao's method is:
1) Establish bases in the countryside (where you have support)
2) Launch sabotage and hit and run attacks
3) When you are strong enough finally defeat the enemy and overthrow the government in open battles.
Che Guevara has written the book Guerrilla warfare and there is also Sun Tzu's book the art of war.

By all means read up on guerilla warfare, but do take it in mind that guerilla warfare is by no means accepted by all Marxists as a legitimate way to overthrow the borgeoise.

the word "Guerrilla" came from Spanish, meaning small wars.
Mao's guerrilla stategy is by no means simply hit and run. It is involves the so-called "moving warfare" developed by the Chinese Communists (Mao and Zhu De) during the guerrilla years.
It is the method of annihilating enemies while keeping the mobility of the army. It is proven to be very hard to deal with for the enemy, even during Koreans war and Sino-Indian border war.
The advantages to the stratege is that, the army is so mobile (also it has to be very organized) that it can storm the enemies like flood (with properly trained soldiers), catching them by surprise. It's also capable of withdrawing quickly and having minimum effect on soldier's morale. Even when the army decides that the battle isnt going so well and they should split up and retreat (which would have disasterous effect on an normal army), it can still regroup itself quickly.
It also involve setting up traps, an ancient Chinese trick, so the Red Army(later People's Liberation Army) can souround its enemy.

wht? u mean, they developed Guerrilla warfare? ...I donno, but the word just meant small wars. any group of people can have small wars.... so we might as well go back to how "cavemen"(who did not necessarily live in caves) fought each other...lol

Well, I meant as in the famous wars. The Phoenicians were famous for a sort of Sea-Guerilla warfare.

no...? I know Phoenicians as launching huge fleets against Rome... the most famous naval war i can think of is when the Romans made hooks on their ship and connected their ship with carthaginian(Phoenician) ships. No guerilla warfare involved.
But if u have sources claiming otherwise, by all means, educate me.

Its basically hit and run tactics, and stay mobile. The word is derived from Spain when they fought the French I think.

No it's not. Hit and run is not only reactionary, it's banditry. The Soviets did not understand the guerilla warfare going on in China, this is why they criticized and made fun of it.
The guerilla strategy developed by Mao and his men was an active and revolutionary strategy that accomplished the otherwise impossible peasantry revolution. It has to be taken seriously by the revolutionaries of third world countries if they ever want to succeed.
I believe Che Guevara learned much from Chinese tacticts, which may or may not have influenced his later decision to favor China over USSR in the Sino-Soviet spit.

The only way the Mao could win against an army 4 times the size of his was guerilla warfare.
