i have a colt and shotguns. but it is pretty much fact you disarm the population you're going to have a lot less murders. Just like it's a fact if you abolish poverty you will have less murders.
I dont think the time America puts into guns and gun culture is ridiculous and wouldn't happen in any sane society.

I say ban all guns, its only more trouble.
Here in Ireland 95+& of ppl have no guns and the gardai also dont carry them, only in specific raids and stuff.
If the guards dont have guns thenmn the ppl dont need them.
It should also be taken out of the American Constitution, what!? is there a risk of the king of england walking right through the door and pushing you around......lol

No offence ID2002, but that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Of course crime rate will remain high if everyone has easy access to a gun. If there are less guns on the streets than there will be less shootings, less murders and less armed robberies.

It's almost as silly as drivers licence. You need their permission to drive your own car?!

This response is going to be mostly based on American/U.S. reasons because I can not speak for a country I do not live in.

Gun control will only work for honest people that already abide the law. For example, if i was really mad at the bourgeoisie pigs I could go down to the sporting goods store, browse their rifle selection, steal one, and kill some fatcat capitalists! (I would not ever do this, just to let you know.)
Besides, telling me that I can not own a gun is saying that I'm not responsible and I'm a criminal by instinct/nature/birth.
If people were happy then they would not need to have their guns taken away. It is only in a society like the U.S.A. that people are constantly shooting each other when there is wealth everywhere. If people knew and believed in their nation and the people of their nation then they would not kill them.
To solve a problem like this one must understand the true issue, are we wanting to disarm the populace or RAPE their freedom?
In the Constitution(a wonderful document giving all sorts of freedoms to white protestant males...)
It talks of the local militias having a right to bear arms. To properly interperate that you must understand what the militia is. Dictionary.com defines it as:

1.An army composed of ordinary citizens rather than professional soldiers.
2.A military force that is not part of a regular army and is subject to call for service in an emergency.
3.The whole body of physically fit civilians eligible by law for military service.

In recent years people have begun to say that the people that should bear arms are the police. Let us check the definition of militia to see if the Police fit it.
A policeman is employed by the government. He is trained specifically for criminal detection and prevention. Are these "Police" ordinary citizens? No they are not. The Police are a REGULAR and PROFESSIONAL paramilitary force controlled by the GOVERNMENT. This means they are not "the people" they are professional SPECIAL FORCES that maintain local community safety.
A militia forms when a threat occurs to the local community, and the local people join together as a unofficial army to protect themselves. So even according to bourgeoise mandates by American founders, the locals must be able to arm themselves.
A reader might be thinking, "Ah yes but by your logic the militia should not require weaponry until it is time for them to form!" That is partly true. But unless they have access to training for using that weaponry how would they be able to defend themselves when the time came?
Also, if there was actually a need for a militia to form, that would mean that the local Police and military reserves must be away, the only people who might have access to those weapons. So without being able to have a firearm with them always, how could they be prepared for a sudden threat?
An American might think an invasion or war might never occur, but If you treat your people as prisoners on their own land, there WILL be war. An outside force does not always have to be the attacker. The U.S. learned that in 1841.
This is like issues about pregnancy, abortion, and sex. There should be education, not restriction or punishment.
