The United States of America was originally founded on many left wing ideals, and in its infancy we could also see that it had quite progressive politics, compared to most European nations at the time.* What made the people change and turned the nation into a machine of war and greed? When did it happen? Discuss.

*This is, of course, not considering slavery and the likes...

Keiza, I'd say that the U$ hasn't shifted as far to the left in the course of the 20th century, as most other western nations did.

The idea of this country being foudned on left wing ideas while still believeing in the instituation of slavery conflict with each other and eventually cancel themselves out.

But in all honesty this country was founded on war and greed. They didn't want to pay some taxes and started a war. This was after they stole the land and killed those who lived on it. Ideas such as manifist destiny just don't pop out of mid air, they had a historical, although short, basis to go off of.

I know what you are saying, but what I mean is the spirit of the people, I have at least heard, that there were many revolutionaries (among the people) and generally the workers were very progressive compared to in other countries. This has changed though.

Ok first off the people never wanted a revolutionary war. That was Washington and the ruling class. They wanted the war because they wanted to rule the land by themselves as to have complete control of the people.

Next, most Americans were never left wing at all. Americans hardly believed in equality. An example of this would be the genocide of the native Americans. This more than just the government, but everday people participated in it. And then there is slavery. We, a supposedly "free nation" had slavery for one hundred years! Most of the Americans supported it! They even went so far as to kill one rebel slave by burning him over a slow open fire for 8-10 hours! Most of these atrocities were doings of the people.

No, this nation has NEVER been left wing to any extent and has always been comprised mostly of racist, sexist, capitalist pigs. If anything the people have gone futher to the left today. But definitely not in the old days. :angry:
