WA GE Moratorium Under Threat
This is an urgent action alert to people living in Western Australia in response to the front page article in todays West Australian titled "Coalition could lift ban on GM crops."
Until now, WA has been the countrys leader in responding to the threat of genetically engineered (GE) foods and crops. The WA Parliamentary Inquiry into GMOs is the most comprehensive examination of the risks and benefits of GE yet to be conducted in Australia. This inquiry in 2003 resulted in the current
moratorium on the growing of GE in Western Australia.
However, as the front page of todays West Australian highlights, that moratorium is under threat if the Liberals and Nationals win the upcoming state election.
It is a critical debate for all of Australia. If WA loses its moratorium other states may follow. It is everyday Western Australians shoppers, farmers, parents, and the food industry who can ensure WA remains GE free.
I strongly encourage you to write a letter to the editor of the West Australian, to call your local talkback radio station, write to your local paper, phone and email your local politicians. Tell them why you want WA to remain GE free.

Some important points to raise include:
Consumers worldwide dont want to buy or eat GE foods.
If consumers dont want GE foods, farmers will not grow it.
If GE is planted, contamination of non-GE crops is inevitable and markets and livelihoods for non-GE growers in WA would be threatened.
Non GE farmers face higher costs and increased exposure to lawsuits and patent/royalty claims.
T
he technology doesnt work. It does not increase yields and results in increased chemical use

Good on you for taking action. The individual activities of everyday people are what have kept GE out of our foods and our fields thus far. Every little bit counts.
