I'm sure the U$ will try to intervene somehow to not let Raul take power. They have already said that Cuba needs to be dealt with.

Its not that they wont let them, they can hardly stop bush saying he will, its what they will do to defended it.A good stratergie might be to go undergroud as I don't belive cuba could stop a full scale U$ invasion head on and then join a resistance from there

Can Raul hold the nation together in the way Fidel has in the past 46 years ?

My uncle, who met with Fidel and Raul Castro a number of times, seems to think that Raul does not have the adequate charisma to lead the country without arousing the anger of the U.S and any invasion of the infamous Miami mafia dissidence in the way his brother has been able to prevent....

Futhermore, are there any lessons to be learned about the invasion of 1961?

Is there support still in Cuba for the revolution, among the people??

Who knows of the opinion in Cuban streets of the revolution and of the socialist dream ???

Has there anyone here ever been to Cuba and researched and documented the amount of support for the revolution today ?

We were able to prevent that disgusting attack then, but now with the Miami mafia being one of the stronger supporting groups of the united states gov, I fear another attempt to bring chaos and capitalist tyranny to the caribbean pearl will unfortunately prove easier. (Prove me wrong, PLEASE!!!)

Will there be support from other nations, militant groups, socialist associations to go down to Cuba when the time comes to fight the ugly imperialist invasion when it comes ??????????

I know I'll do my best to provide any support possible to make sure our dream of a socialist revolution lives on in Cuba.

HASTA LA VICTORIA SIEMPRE !

Short answer: Raul will replace Fidel.

Long answer: Raul is getting on in years himself.

Who's going to replace Raul?

Short Answer: Raul will be replaced by someone in the Council of State

Long Answer: The Council of State will have reelections, and then a President will be chosen from it.

Castro has been a great leader of Cuba, being one of the original revolutionaries, and certainly will be missed, but Cuba will live on. It is not as the U$ and it's supporters say, a dictatorship built on one man. Rather, it is a fully developed democratic system that can accomadate for the loss of one of their leaders. While there may never be another Castro, Cuba will not collapse from his mere absence. Let us hope, however, that the imperialists keep their hands away from Cuba once Castro dies, which undoubtfully the U$ will see as a moment of weakness.

I believe that the most likely scenario is that a new President will be elected by the National Assembly, and then after a while, perhaps there will be a vote all over the country.

Why did he meet Fidel and Raúl?

A few reports say he is disabled after he fell of a roof, but I haven't seen any serious reports about it.

is age to do something with the efficiency and experience???

Rather, it is a fully developed democratic system

"Do not be too eager to deal out death and judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

The government is elected by the National Assembly. Even the National Assembly isn't elected by the people. From what I read, The National Assembly is elected by local leaders.

How can this be called "a fully developed democratic system"?

is age to do something with the efficiency and experience???

What kind of efficiency are you talking about?

A 16 year old might know more than a 70 year old, but a 70 year old might have more experience. How do you determine these things, anyways?

The scenario I put forward above is particularily true in the third world, where the younger generations can (if they are lucky) get access to less biased education, and if they are (even more) lucky, they learn to communicate with people from other parts of the world through the internet, etc.

But generally, in a more "developed" society, I think someone older has on average a lot more experience than a person that is younger.

I haven't heard anything since it happened, but what I did hear is that he broke an arm and a leg.

At Fidel's age, he probably will never heal. He may be able to walk again, but he'll never be the same, and have a serious limp (and will have to use a cane, if not walker)

now I did hear about the fractures on U.S. news, and since the U.S. has no direct links with Cuba (and the fact the U.S. likes to bend the truth) the breaks may have been a lie.

I saw the fall, however, and in my own professional opinion (as a trained radiological technologist. . .aka medical optics. . .CAT scans, xrays, MRI, sonograph, etc.) the fall very likely broke a few bones. I'm shocked he didn't break his skull.

Bottom line, Fidel will tell the weather accurately, he'll get to park in the blue parking space, and he'll have to take asprin on a regualr basis. I don't think he is "disabled" tho.

http://www.cubapolidata.com/gpc/gpc_council_of_state.html

Any of these people are eligible to become President of Cuba. The Council of State, elected by the Parliament, appoint their President, First Vice President, and several Vice Presidents, and lower positions. They form the executive branch.

Why couldn't they have an election to let the people choose the new leader?

america couldn't invade Cuba especially on the ground that their leader has just died that would be more unjust than the Iraq war.

If Castro dies Raul will take over and sinces he's old im sure they'll have another person ligned up for the position. Theres nothing to worry about. :D

To answer your question, NWOG, my uncle is one of the leaders of the Quebec city branches of ATTAC (Association for the Taxation of Financial Transactions for the Aid of Citizens). He went to Cuba (I think) on a few occasions to meet el gran líder as part of the organisation of the greater World Social Forum held in Porto Alegre, Brazil. I know he spent some few hours with the man.

while raul would most likely take power for a time, it is a scarry thought since that small weakness could allow in the Americans. I wonder what would happen hwoever, if the US invaded etc. and supposed 'free' elections were finally help and the communists were put back into power? However, hopefully that scenario will never be lived out.

We all know that Fidel is going to die soon...We'd better hope that he can live out until Bush leaves...because now he is on his second term and he can get away with just about anything without worrying about reelection. Even if Fidel does die during the bush reign, good king george will have already been in Iran and maybe Syria, not to mention still in Iraq and Afghanistan....and if were tied down in Iraq and Afghanistan we cant possibly hope to be in Iraq, Afghanistan, Cuba, Syria and Iran, even if we had a draft...which probably will happen.
