Stalin to stage comeback

Thursday 20 January 2005, 10:35 Makka Time, 7:35 GMT

Moscow is planning to erect a new statue of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, returning his image to its streets after an absence of four decades.

Since President Vladimir Putin was elected in 2000, a number of Soviet symbols - including the national anthem and an army flag - have been resurrected, reflecting widespread nostalgia for Russia's communist years.

But the rehabilitation of Stalin, who was denounced after his death in 1953 by the Soviet leadership for encouraging a cult of personality and killing millions of opponents, has previously been out of bounds.

Statues of Stalin were removed from Moscow's public spaces in the 1960s.

Monument

"A monument will be erected to those who took part in leading the war against Adolf Hitler, including Stalin," said Oleg Tolkachev, Moscow's senator in the upper house of parliament.

Interfax news agency reported earlier that a Stalin monument would also be built in the Belgorod region near the Ukrainian border to mark the Soviet victory against Nazi Germany 60 years ago.

In another sign of Stalin's growing appeal, state television channels have shown a number of prime-time television shows in recent months depicting him in a positive light.

That's true. I watched some of them on the First National Channel. In one soap opera they show Stalin as a person, not political leader. In this movie he likes jokes and riddles and eats a lot of cucumbers and honey )))).
The most ironic is the fact that the character of Stalin was played by the president of a russian bank

well, it is the fact that he fought against Nazism that has earned him this statue. and not the fact that he supressed and killed millions.

I have no problem with countries reckonising their history, good or bad. But I would hope that someone who was that malevolent and murderous isn't being portrayed positively. Also my partner and I have long felt that Putin is on the verge resorting back to Soviet Russia and this tends to symbolisze that. When Putin made the oil rigs public property and caused some of parliamentary representatives to relinquish some power to him after the Chechen terrorist attack it signified a return to Soviet Russia slowly.

Recognising history's good, but you can hardly imagine the Germans erecting a statue of Hitler can you? Mind you in britain there's plenty statues of people like Churchill and numerous other imperialists.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem all that ironic. :(

Has anyone actually seen a picture of the statue? Its a statue of the three leaders on the bench at Yalta, and the Stalin likeness isn't even very good. its nothing glorifying the guy or anything like that.

Isn't it just the principle though? I mean a statue of Hitler or Himmler or Goering probably wouldn't be very flattering either.

I wonder what people would do if Germany erected a statue of Hitler.
