In my experiance most people, including my self, bought tragically bad albums when they were young, I thought it would be a laugh to see what other people bought when they were first getting into music, and probably are now totally ashamed of. Having said that however, I was just looking through my CD's and discovered "Dizzy heights" by the Lightining Seeds and "Morning Glory" by Oasis, these were the first two real albums I ever bought. However my initial great buys do not excuse my not marginally later attrocities, which included a shameful Offspring album... but we won't go into that.

Of course I had been buying shitty compelation albums (they don't count) prior to the momentus occasions when I purchased that Oasis album in 1995 (which would have made me 9, and Dizzy Heights in 1996, and I can still say that they are both fantastic albums. While other people my age listened to Shaggy and the Spice Girls, I was listening to Oasis and scouser brit pop icons the Lightning seeds.... and unfortunatly the Offspring.

What either astonishingly good, or momentously bad music were you listening too before you refined your tastes a little?

Started off listening to my parents Oasis and Elvis Costello when I was mega-little (5) in the car and stuff. Around 7/8 I started listening to serious crap, I mean below Spice Girls, S Club 7, etc. I mean, the lowest of the low. My first single was a Westlife thinG. >_< Then I got Hit Me Baby One More Time by Britney Spears which admittedly is understandable for a 7/8 year old guy. (Not only was she the prettiest girl I ever saw at the time but her videos were kinda sexy for my still developing libido. I remember the B-side being pretty good but that's probably by my (6 years) old standards. Then after a Westlife album I actually got into Grieg (yes, the old classical guy) for a while when I was like 8/9. Then a little after Westlife's second album I started listening to real stuff, 4 Star Mary being my favourite band up until I got back into Stereophonics (who I actually liked what I'd heard of from about 7), then with Stereophonics, Oasis. This takes me up until about 11, when I got into Nirvana. I'd like to say the first album I myself owned was "Just Enough Education To Perform" by Stereophonics but I won't lie... However I can't remember the Westlife albums so meh. I do remember the Grieg one I liked "Pyr Gint 2" or something.

I had horrible taste as a kid. I LOVED The Carpenters, I'd sing along to all their albums at the top of my lungs, and I still remember the words. I had all of the New Kids on the Block cassettes  I was in love with Joey. I also owned some Madonna, Paula Abdul, and DEBBIE GIBSON was my favorite. I had some New Edition and BBD too....man I was really lame... well... some would debate that "was"...

Ohh yeah, I remember that, I actually got that as well. Same kind of time I got "Dizzy" probably... I had forgotten that attrocity. :D

Didn't it have some line about smashing the mike?

First CD: NOW 42

Was that the one with the Wamdoo project on it, or some rubbish like that?

I never bought any album and I never owned one, too.

Ohh no! You must be joking, music is fantastic and a good album is a work of art.

As for my origional stuff, I am actually listening to the Lightening seeds now.

Who out of the Brit/Irish members remembers them? They did that football song for Euro '96, you remember "Three Lions". For the record, the only time patriotism is accaptable is when the football is on.

They never really went away. They reappear every so often. I wouldn't say patriotism is acceptable outside of England, but massive anti-England sentiment is acceptable in every other country.

It's largely due to how the media must portray England/Britain in sport, as the greatest team in every sport and competition, even when they're clearly not. Another example of the patriotism in the British media was at the time of the Greg Rusedski drug links, when originally Rusedski was always considered British (as a Canadian playing for Britain), as soon as the drug smear appeared, he was no long British but "Canadian Greg Rusedski".

I think the first album I went out with a conscious desire to get a hold of was SUM41's "Half Hour Of Power" EP . . . about five years ago (I feel so young, haha). Interestingly, the liner notes mentioned Closet Monster (http://www.closetmonster.com/), who were instrumental in politicizing me . . .

Some of those albums are actually pretty good....and none are bad enough to make my first album any less pathetic. I bought Poison's "Flesh and Blood'. Do you have any idea how many replays of "Will The Fetus Be Aborted' it took to wash away the feelings of shame associated with actually owning a poison album? My taste got better quickly..Living Colour and Faith No more were two of my early favorites. but still..I bought a Poison album..((shudders))

Cher - Believe

Most people who has "good taste" with music started with Queen and the Beatles. So if someday you have a child, buy him/her "Revolver". Otherwise they might end up buying crap as Britney Spears, Poison and Motley Crue
