Even though Peart's very lassez-faire, and his lyrics reflect that pretty heavily, they are all damned good musicians, especially Geddy Lee.... playing bass with his right hand, playing keyboards with his left, and singing up in the soprano range. The only things I really don't like about them are their political views, or rather Ayn Rand's reactionary views based on the Soviets.
Really, though, political view doesn't have much to do with the music I like. One of my favorite songs is Dream Theater's "Learning to Live," and that actually quotes "Atlas Shrugged" in the opening lines. I just shrug it off and enjoy the music and poetry that make up the rest of the song.
The song in question in this thread, by the way, is based off Rand's "Anthem", on which they also wrote a shorter song of the same title, which is a little more blatant:
"Well, I know they’ve always told you
Selfishness was wrong
Yet it was for me, not you, I
Came to write this song"
Yeah, that's a real attractive sentiment, Neil.
Apparently "Learning To Live" is actually about being diagnosed with AIDs, so its unlikely to have a particular political opinion (besides an anti-AIDs message), the quote probably just sounded good and they twisted the meaning or something. :P.
