When the federal government wanted to impose a national speed limit, rather than enacting legislation to this end, it threatened to withhold federal road funds from states that refused to impose a 55-mile-per-hour limit.
Do you think this was a valid way to exercise federal authority? Why do you think Congress didn't simply legislate a national speed limit?

To preserve the "legal fiction" that American states are not totally dominated by the Federal Government.
Since the right of the Federal Government to "regulate interstate commerce" has long been upheld, Washington could have directly imposed such a speed limit if it had wished to do so.
But "appearances must be maintained".

Not a just thing at all. Side Note: The speed limit in Iowa is 65 :o ! Which sucks on road trips. Also they just doubled the tolls on I-80 into to chicago, I live within 200 miles of Chicago and to take the most direct route it cost almost 10 dollars in tolls!

The reason there are speed limits is to cut down on road accidents. Not living the USA I can't really comment on that case, but in Australia they are set by the states. It just so happens that the 6 states got together and made all the laws the same. Having the laws the same for something like the road is hardly an imfringment of freedoms (unless the laws were really stupid) so why not the federal govt. do it?

I think it should be put to a vote in the United states.

What is the national speed limit in Amerika? Because RATR complains about going at 65mph, well in NZ we do less.
