last night on BBC news i caught a brief snipit of Senator John Kerry in discusions with that rice woman (not going to attempt to spell her first name) during which she was outlining the 'pockets of evil' or whatever still left in the world and again Iran and North Korea were mentioned. Leaving Iran aside I don't believe North Korea to be as big a threat as the U.S and U.K governments would try to have us belive, and here's why.
The North Korean economy is believed to be based heavily upon the sale of ballistic missiles I heard a figure of about 95% though I don't have any evidence to back this up. Many of these are legitimate arms deals with countries not listed on the 'axis of evil' countries which would adhere to any arms embargo placed upon North Korea. Consider this if the UN were to empose such an embargo the North Korean economy would collapse almost instantly. The North Korean leadership know this, so this alleged threat doesn't exist The North Koreans aren't stupid they may spout rhetoric of non compliance and defiance but they do this merely to save face infront of their people

The North Koreans are just putting up a front in an attempt to get more money. That is why recently Kim Jong II just renewed talks.

Now I'm no expert, but that sounds implausible to me. Whoever you heard that from will have been lying - its blatantly anti DPRK propaganda.

Kim Jong II? You mean Kim Jong Il! The first guy who was placed there by Stalin was named Kin Il Sung, the current leader is called Kim Jong Il...i think you confused the Il with the II.
Anyway, whatever, they both suck!

The North Koreans are the threat because the US wants to make them as such.
And I heard that the US made attacks in Iran. Is this true?

North Korea try to move towards self-reliance (Basicly, that is what Juche means).
Kim Jong-Il said in "On the Juche Idea"
The leader laid down the principles of Juche in ideology, independence in politics, self-sufficiency in the economy, and self-reliance in defense as the principles of realizing Chajusong. The principles of Juche, independence, self-sufficiency and self-reliant defense are the guiding principles of realizing Chajusong in the spheres of ideology, politics, the economy and defense.
(3) SELF-SUFFICIENCY IN THE ECONOMY
The economy is the material basis of social life. Economic self-sufficiency enables one to consolidate the independence of one's country and live independently, provides a sure guarantee for Juche in ideology, independence in politics, and self-reliance in defense and ensures rich material and cultural lives for the people.
In order to implement the principle of economic self-sufficiency, one must build an independent national economy.
Building an independent national economy means building an economy which is free from dependence on others and which stands on its own feet, an economy which serves one's own people and develops on the strength of the resources of one's own country and by the efforts of one's own people. Such an economy makes it possible to develop the productive forces quickly by utilizing the nation's natural resources in a rational and integrated way, improve the people's living standard continuously, strengthen the material and technical foundations of socialism, and increase the nation's political, economic and military power. It also ensures the exercise of complete sovereignty and equality in political and economic affairs in international relations and contributes to strengthening the world 's anti-imperialist, independent forces and socialist forces. It is vital to build an independent national economy particularly in those countries which were backward economically and technically because of imperialist domination and plunder in the past. Only when they build an independent national economy in these countries, will they be able to repel the new colonial policy of the imperialists, free themselves completely from their domination and exploitation, wipe out national inequality, and vigorously advance on the road of socialism.

This may just be my opinion but i get the feeling that North Korea are too involved with themselves and being rite gits towards the population to cuase a serious threat to any one apart from South Korea at the moment.
There only being discussed because America thinks of them as a theat and maybe wants to take over or at least get rid of Kim Jong-Il

its better than my typo in the other thread- of kim il dung. i cant be arsed to change it.
anyways, korea is no threat to the western world. they have said they will give up their weapons programme in return for a guarantee on security, and economic help.
their military is purely for defence, as they believe that america will help south korea attack at any moment. and i dont blame them- when a war has been fought (who invaded who, we will never know), and the foreign enemy is on the other side, halting any hopes of reunification; then of course they will defend themselves.
