I was a Catholic . . .

. . . sex and class war are more fun, though I'm partially tempted to head off to the seminary after I flunk out of University. Just because I find the idea of a secretly-atheist-communist-free-love-inclined preist somewhat entertaining.

Eddie Van Halen, eh? I once knew a crazy German guy who thought he was Sammy Hagar. Anyhow, welcome to the fray comrade.

Hey! I'm a newbie here too, just looking around and trying to find out more. Why did you stop being religious?

Well the religious aspect of me had been pretty much drilled into me from birth, baptised in the cathedral etc, and when i started readin some marx in my philosophy classes, it made me think about what my religion was really all about.

I had a read of some other things, memoirs written by soviet generals, books about marx and engels, and it sort of showed me a different side to my religion that i hadnt seen before, all the hypocrisy in its equality teachings etc,

eventually i told my parents i wasnt doing it anymore, and after several hourse of heated debate, i exchanged the crucifix in my room for a nice red flag (ala les miserables), to annoy them, and began to studdy communism in its early forms.

Im still pretty new to all this btw, so please dont ask me anything that needs minutae knowledge of peoples books and all that.

Before i started to study these ideas i was a member of the Orthodox Christian church.

Hmm, you're probably the most similar person to me, I got into Marxism fairly early at age fourteen. The hardest part of accepting Marxism was giving up religon, that was hard, but just like you, the cross came off the wall, and the Red banner went up.

Interestingly I never had a cross on the wall. And I didn't exchange it for a flag either. I just quietly realised the problems with Catholicism, and left it. Then I gave up on religion altogether.

I still go to church when at home, but only so as not to cause a fuss, as far as I know my mother still thinks I'm a Catholic. Though Dad knows that I haven't entered a church by myself (only when with family), only 'cause he asked but.

I don't understand why religion clashes with communism. There are loads of religious people who have communist views.

I know someone is going to come in here and cut my head off for saying this, but the newer liberal religions have little problem with communism! If everyone does thier share, gets thier share, and is treated fairly and equally--that's what we want! As a religious person, that's what I want!
