I know it's not leftist literature as such but still has anyone read and what did you thing of it?

I enjoyed it very much, found it very witty, funny, clever and at some points extremely moving. My biggest criticism is probably that it repeats itself a good few times and perhaps he could have made it more concentrated. But it's a fantastic anti-war piece and I laughed too.

Yeh im finding it to be just like that too. It took me a while to get into it but now i'm realy enjoying it. I know quite afew people who have tried to read it but failed i suppose it's one of those books you either love or you hate and im glad to say im in the first camp.
It is just abit rambly at times like you said...

It's basically about a group of American airmen who don't like the idea of being killed in a war that they wish they had no part of. It's about how they survive and whatever they will do to acheive this. very funny book...

It has its humorous moments...but as others have noted, it is way too long.
Like if someone took a 15 minute comedy skit and made a three-hour movie from it.
Catch-22 refers to trying to legally evade combat duty on the grounds of insanity -- by trying to evade combat duty, you clearly demonstrate that you're not insane.

It was a little lengthy, and the humor was sort of the same through out, but I really liked it.

I wouldn't have said it was "too long". The repetition of the incidents is what makes the story so beautiful. Everything crossed paths with everything else, and everything effected everything else. It's "big", but easy reading, when you get down to it. HIllarious stuff.
"Closing Time", the sequel, was a lot longer and not as funny. Good read, nonetheless. It made me think more than Catch-22.

I'm only halfway through right now, and I hear it's the last three/fourths that actually ties the story together so it makes sense :o).
