View Full Version : American Oppression?

I have read around in this community, and am ready to accept the ideals preached here, but for a big problem. Around the forums, people seem to take the idea "Big bad America" as a given, and I've heard about its oppressive presence in Latin America, but I haven't read any articles containing real evidence that it is true. Do any of you have links to articles showing America's global harrassment? And I'm talking about nowadays. Everyone knows about the situation in Iraq, and the right wing justifies EVERYTHING that happens there by our hands, but what about elsewhere?

Assuming you live in America, why would you have read such things? The very same capitalists who oppress the worker, run the state and oppress the foreign worker, run the media and oppress the truth. You're not gonna see it unless you look for it. While this is a good place to start, and admittedly I'm simply too lazy to go find you articles which you should be able to find with simple google searches anyway, it would be much better to take time of your own and say "Do I want to find the truth?" If you can answer yes to that, then you need only to figure out how, the internet makes it fairly easy.

It depends on what you would call reliable resources? There is plenty of information on the net about Latin American oppression by the U$A by simply googling it. You can google "United States" "Latin America" and use other phrases that might drive to what you're looking for....like "exploitation", "globalization", "School of the America's", "NAFTA", etc. Some sites I could suggest at the top of my head are: Independent Media Center (http://www.indymedia.org/en/index.shtml), Mother Jones (http://www.motherjones.com/), PBS (http://www.pbs.org/), and NPR news (http://www.npr.org/templates/topics/topic.php?topicId=1). I know a bit about U$ relations with Latin-America, if you would like some info just PM me or add me to a messenger. Not only from first hand experience but from studying it extensively for some Latin-American relations classes in college. :)
Also, wanted to comment that it is awesome that you are seeking out information and actively trying to find out the truth! :) Goodluck!
EDIT: here's a thread that is related to this topic...

Many of Noam Chomsky's writings, being essays, speaches or books, contain information and statistics all cited so you can go and look for yourself.

It isn't just the USA it is all the Imperialist states. The developing nations need capital, in both loans and investment these states (whether by the political state itself or by the collective actions of the private sector of these countries i.e the state :) )exploit the developing countries. If, for example a homeless person desperately needs money, somebody gives him a small amount of money to...say...pull one of his teeth out on camera, that is akin to what America and the other Imperialist countries do to the developing nations-except-instead of the tooth it is property which is taken away, becomes the property of the imperialists and for a small price to them. Investment in the productive sectors of the imperialist nation's economies decline and these economies:heavy engineering, metal workers, farming etc wither away and in their place grow finance and high-tech manufacture as labour intensive work is done for a fraction of the price in the developing countries. And so the imperialist screws all the workers of the world over. Oh, but the worker does notice an improvement in his life, but only a fraction of the improvement the imperialist shall see. The gap between rich and poor widens. You don't need any documents for this, I am sure you have heard stories of these things happening in the news and as for the investment...it goes without saying...it is the nature of capitalism. Thankfully, CUba is NOT FOR SALE! For countries with the sense to resist American dominance military comes into play, there was nothing the American's wanted more than to privatize the Iraqi oil fields. Again, exploiting their military supremacy over the small countries.

here is the best recourse I know on the crimes of U.S. imperialism
http://rwor.org/s/crimes.htm
Just go through the articles.....!
The best summation of the crimes and role of U.S. imperialism -- a poetic and scientific "indictment" is here:

That part is a "Communist Manifesto" for our times.

IF the information given to you by these other members is not enough, you could find a search engine and type in "A brief History of the CIA" and find more than you may have wanted know about the U.S' role in oppressing peoples of third world countries for economic gain.
