He was a Sicilian peasant who became a separatist bansit in 1943 after the American occupation. But in fact he wanted the USA to annex Sicily (he had written a letter to president Truman about this). On one hand he is told to be a new kind of Robin Hood, giving the goods stolen from the rich to the poor. On the other hand he is declared a right-wing terrorist, and his men did kill 8 people on a communist festival on May 1! Mario Puzo wrote a book about him, "The Sicilian" in which he depicts "Turi" a nice guy with a romantic attitude. A statue was raised for him in his native town, Montelepre.

I made this thread only to ask you if you know anything about him because the more I search on Google the messier the story becomes :huh: Got any info about the man?

Muddy indeed, Wiki states that he has been mythologized and stories just sprung up around him.

But all in all, as it says in Wiki, Giuliano was indeed a Sicilian nationalist who formed a milita of about 50 outlaws and homeless men who launched attacks on the Italian government and sent letters to Truman asking for the annexation of Sicilia into the Union. Also the group led other terrorist-esque activities such as kidnapping and such.

But everything is indeed muddy because everything I recieve from Google on his turns up different.

I've read Puzo's book and in it Giuliano is a simple guy fighting for the poor. If his band abuses anyone it's never his fault (which I can beleive if he really was such a good person). I've also read Wiki about him and it also mentions the massacre at the Portella della Ginestra, but in Puzo's book he is not responsible for it because one of his chiefs had been bribed by the mafia withou the knowing of Giuliano. And though he was a patriot and a person who strongly beleived in God, I wouldn't call him a right-wing man because no nationalist would ask a country to annex his homeland! Strange story... :ph34r:
