View Full Version : Variety

Cooler Reds Will Prevail

One thing that I've never quite understood or come across in my research is how a variety of things, such as food, clothes, etc. are dealt with in a Socialist society. I myself am a convinced leftist, however, I quite like being able to have a choice in the type of food that I eat on a given night, for example. If I were to go out to dinner with my family, would I have a choice in restaurants with different food, or if I didn't like the type of Mexican food at a certain restaurant, would I be able to find another Mexican restaurant with food that I liked better? Or clothes, if one person prefers baggy clothes compared to normal cut clothes, how would a society go about providing this variety to people? I'm hoping that I make sense.

Noticing the number of people who enjoy cooking, I expect there will be quite a large variety of restaurants in communist society -- except for the "luxury" places that exist in such numbers now.

The goal will be good food, not vulgar display.

As to fashions in clothing, I imagine that they'll be some attention paid to such matters...but it's hard to predict how much. One of the reasons that there is so much variety in clothing now is that the manufacture of clothing is based on cheap "third world" labor...and that won't exist any more.

I'd be very surprised if everyone dressed identically (like China in the 60s and 70s)...but there might well be only a few dozen "basic outfits" -- and if you didn't like them, then you might well have to learn to make your own clothing.

Remember that under capitalism, we (or at least many people) dress not for utility but to "make a fashion statement" about their "social identity".

If you wear "cool clothes", that's supposed to tell people that you're a "cool person".

In communist society, you'll be known as a "cool person" because you do cool things and do them well.

I read somewhere that for such things like clothing, books or food, there would be groups that would do that in their freetime or you learn it and do it for yourself for some weeks.Maybe there wouldnt be such a great need for much variety since everybody would be identified for what they are and not for what they have and so,all would be different and not imaginable now...

Think about punk rock for instance (no not the stuff on the radio, the real stuff) ive always been impressed by those kids who can take the same jean jacket as everyone else they know has, but turn it into artwork. Therefore, you just have to use creativity if you want the clothing you want. As far as dinner, i think people will continue making different types. I like tacos alot as oppose to someone else liking pizza alot. But you cant eat everything all the time so therefore the people will have a choice because they will create it.
