I thought about posting this in "Science and Environment," but it seems more politically oriented than environmental. I suppose it could go either place, regardless, there are some important things happening regarding energy, particulary oil, on the geo-political front that may be of interest to the members.
As Peak Oil approaches, the battle lines are being drawn for control of global resources. We're probably getting ready to enter a new period of world wide conflict unlike anything we've seen since WW2. Consider some recent developments:
-Chavez has just returned from a Christmas trip to China where he apparently struck a deal with the Chinese together with prospecting rights.
-Canada is negotiating to sell up to 1/3 of its oil reserves to China.
-The BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) alliance is also formed, now encompassing Venezuela and Iran as un-acronymed members.
-China is also shopping in Argentina.
-China "finds" a "proven" 9 million tons of oil

-Russia and China announce large joint military exercises, and the EU is negotiating to drop its ban on arms shipments to China.
-Russia annonces a pipeline deal with Japan.
-And US "freedom fighters" in Africa. What's really happening is the US military is being transformed into a world-wide oil protection and resource management operation with fighting lasting in Central Africa for 20 years!

"Africa: Oil, al-Qaeda and the US military"

-And last, but not least, non-Kyoto participants China, India and the US announce the building of 850 new coal plants which will produce five times more emissions than the Kyoto treaty would cut. China alone accounts for 502 of these.
All of these moves place a tremendous amount of pressure on Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia and obviously the US. It seems Bush and his neo-con buddies are taking us straight into geopolitical hell, and the end of US global preeminence may be near.
Cheers,
D
