Investigate local, grass roots groups in your area. There are a host of issues with air, water and soil in almost every region and community. Believe me, you won't have much trouble finding them.
If you're in the US, check the Sierra Club website for the chapter in your area. While I'm not a big fan of the national Sierra Club (they've become too big and too hierarchical to suit my tastes), the local chapters do have engaged people that can tell you what the issues are in your backyard.
Earthfirst! is another option, if you're of the more radical slant. Earthfirst! has lost some of its lustre over the years, but some chapters still do good work.
Good luck...let me know what you find out.

If you're in the United States chek out the debate on ANWR (Alaskan National Wildlife Reserve), where, no proceeding Bush's election, oil companies will likely now drill for oil. It seems true that the actual enviromental implecations may not be toooooo terrible, but there's also a moral issue of the intended use of the land, so I'd check that out, but yea go enviroment!

it really depends on what issues you are interested in and what types of advocacy work you want to do - are you looking to lobby directly, use direct action etc? think about not only what you want to achieve but also whjat you want to get out of the experience and go from there.

Sierra seems to becoming a bit wierd, particulay within its highest ranks. their policies on immigration have drawn them a lot of critisim. they recognise populatioon growth as being a major issue at the mopment, but see it as a national, not international problem - and see stopping immigration to the USA as the solution
