Paradox

Does anyone watch "Austin Stevens: Snakemaster" on Animal Planet? That's what I had originally planned to do, become a herpetologist. But now I plan to become a doctor so I can help people on reservations or other places where there's a lack of good doctors and such. Anyways, how would herpetology fit into Communist society? I'd like to be able to study it and research the environment etc., etc. So just how would this, and science work as a whole?
Also, perhaps this may be a stupid question, but how would pets work in Communist society? I'm not talking about dogs or cats, I'm talking about more exotic things like snakes and tarantulas. I have a Burmese Python, would people still keep these animals, or would it be considered wrong to keep such large and "wild" animals as pets?
