Apologies if this has already been asked, but what do people think would be the way of law and order in a truely communist society. Some would say you could still have the institution of police, however others would argue this would be a form of hierarchy giving someone power over the people. Perhaps people would use community law however this could just lead to whichhunts. Sorry if this seems incredibly naive, maybe a simple answer is right under my nose but i can't smell it...
:(
Thanks

Comunism, by definition removes poverty and establishes equality. If we remove poverty and establish equality then we remove the need and motivation to steal as people will have what they need and nobody would have access to amenaties they didn't. Further more, the concept of 'boredom crime' (getting into crime simply because of a lack of any more productive opportunities.) Also, in a communal society people would respect each other more so there would be less likelyhood of crime because of that. All that we would really be left with is 'crimes of passion' and such like, and I'm sure future generations will develop a just and fair way of dealing with them, I very much doubt there will be much cause for punishment in the conventional sense. As for policing, I believe communities and individuals would be fairly self policing, just as they would be self governing. There would be little need for a dedicated police force...

It is also worth looking at the cause of a lot of crime - societies influence on the person. Obviously in a communist society where there is little to no greed or hunger etc this would not be a problem. You are right in regards to the idea of theft for example, as there would be little need. I was thinking more in terms of murders, rapes etc... Without any real structure to catch these people its going to be down to public 'witchhunting' as i said... thats when the wrong people start being caught.
what do people think of this? or are there other ways round this?
