View Full Version : Downloading CDs on the Web

I was wondering if you have ever hured of a band that insted of making a CD and selling it in stores for $18 had the CD on a site that people could just go and download and burn? Be even cooler if they had designs that you could get to copy onto your burned CD with a perminate marker.
Thats one way to beat the RIAA in its stupied game.

Yeah, used to be a lot easier too, but the RIAA recently took down lots of bittorrrent sites, so it's harder to find stuff
But I'm sure it's out there
Anyway IF I did download music I'd store some of it on my pc and burn the best of it onto cds to listen to while I'm studying
As to the other part of your post, somebody used to (don't know if they still do) make some kinda cd labeling thing, pretty sure you could print designs and stuff on them

The RIAA does not represent all recording artists or record companies.
Any stuff that I download is music of that type.
You are most likely to get nabbed if you are sharing crappy top 40 music.

I generally find a particular song I want and never download a whole album...If I want the album I tend to like the physical album....if I'm not sure if I want something I just get a friend to copy it for me...If I like it I'll buy their other albums if I don't I won't listen to it so they aren't really using a paying listener.

I only download albums to pass the time until I actually buy it. I find copied CDs disgusting. They have no artwork and no linear notes.

I'm beginning to like Soulseek. Torrents are pretty good but so far, they've been unsuccessful when I've been looking for obscure stuff. I haven't tried DC++ much, mainly because I don't know any good hubs.

Im not all up on the lingo so what is DC++ and Torrents?

Ok I'm no com-sci student but this is my impression of them.
DC++ is a file sharing program where you set a side certain files on your hard drive to be accessable by other people. DC++ basically allows other people to connect to that area and copy what you have in that area. It all works through hubs, you enter a hub, you are then able to connect to other people who are also in that hub.
I like DC++ because you don't get as much stuff which doesn't work, and you don't get as much porn, because the people who run the hubs often don't like it, and ban people who do provide shit.
Bit torrents, basically allow you to download stuff quickly. You have seeders and leachers, seeders ae the people who provide the data, and leachers are people dowloading. basically what happens is that the leachers download certain parts of the data, once they have done that they then upload that piece to other leachers, and so on. So theoretically you should get it all quite quick.
In order to use Torrents you need an up to date bit torrent client, I recomend BitComet. I used to use NovaTorrent, and would prefer it if it hadn't become rather out of date.
You then download the torrent file from a site which provides them, such as http://lokitorrent.com, and the program should do the rest.
If my analasys is wrong, then anybody feal free to correct me, or if its not detailed enough, same applies.

Well I haven't tried DC++ or Torrents, but I wouldn't classify Soulseek as rubbish. I've found some of the most obscure types of stuff. And if some people have porn or other stuff who cares it doesn't affect me.
And your description of DC++ seems identical to that of Soulseek minus the bit about hubs. What advantages do hubs give you?

None that can really notice, other than petty organisational lay out, but then I don't understand the technical side, I just prefer the look.
But most importantly for some odd reason Soulseek has been banned by my university network, and that pisses me off. At home I have a router, and can't be bothered messing around with the configuration or even worse reading the FAQ, so I am naturally bias.
So all in all you can probably ignore my critisims, because I'm just to lazy to make it work.

What's a mirror? In order to download BitTorrent, I have to select a mirror, but what happens if my country is not listed?(I think I've asked this question again somewhere...)
EDIT:Don't answer, I just saw Enigma's reply in another thread and I'm trying to download it! :)

Ive only ever downloaded single songs or a few songs. I just like 'having' a CD. It's better than just a file on the net, plus the bands know at least someone thinks they are good.

I have a vaguely bourgeois fascniation with owning actual CDs. I like the uncompressed sound quality and artwork and linear notes, I also like having proper CDs with cases, the songs in their proper order, having all the tracks, rather than a compilation or random mp3s...
celtopunk
16th January 2005, 23:48
I'm kind of with RZ on this one. I like artwork and liner notes and such but even a store bought CD can't compare to an LP in that regard. I have some CDs where the lyrics and liner notes are too small to read. I never had that problem with LPs. LP's also kind of force you to listen to the music more, at least that is the case for me. You can't throw an LP in your portable player and go jogging, biking or walk around town or whatever. You aren't distracted by other things so much or just having the music in the background, it is more the focus of what you are doing rather than an accompaniment.
Having said all that I do have a large number of mp3 files. I mostly dl stuff that I already own in a different format (LP or cassette) or sometimes if I'm making a comp and am too lazy to dig out the cd to pull a track off of it I'll download it instead. I also dl music as a way to expose myself to other artists/bands.

I have that to an extent, and I like owning CD's. However I put them onto my PC anyway and after a while listen to them off that anyway, largley befouse the sound system on my PC is far better than anything else I own. It (the PC) also has a media library so at a tough of a button I can load a playlist, album, artist or whatever. This means I don't have to fart around with CD's, book shelves and draws looking for the bloody things. They also get scratched as well, which can be a real pain in the ass, and no mistake.

Never for a full album, I only download particular songs I like.
Usually my friends and I have them burnt on Cds and we share (copying those we like on our computers.)

Unless you have an amp hooked up to your computer, then the sound won't be that impressive...
Even if you buy a $200 set of speakers with a subwoofer and everything, it'll still be pretty weak.
I listen to music exclusively from my CD player. Even the music I download from the internet.
In fact, I have celtopunk's punk mix and his folk mix on CD.

Doesn't have to be in your country, bittorrent sites aren't for downloading, they only give you the links to the bittorrent downloads, again http://tracker.piratbyran.org/frame.html is the best site so far to download with bitttorrent, currently downloading all the Sims :P

I burn most of my MP3s to CD. I like owning the real thing and if I really like a copy I'll try to get the real thing. The sad truth is though I just don't have enough money and CDs are too expensive. E.g. I get $20 a month, if I'm lucky that's 2-3 cheap CDs, and I can't even do that 'cause I spend all my money on manga.

I have a couple of very shitty speakers. My previous PC was a compaq which has a couple of high quality JBLPro ones...but unfortunately when I plug them on my current "clone" PC they sound so low :( ...I don't know if i need drivers or what (maybe it is because the other PC had speaker volume's control on the monitor)..if somebody knows please tell me.
Most of my music is downloaded. CDs are pretty expensive here. The problem with downloading music is the quality: sometimes you can find some great quality ones, but still...

I have no idea what's going on with your computer.
All I can say is try the sound adjustment in your control panel.
I would suggest you get yourself an amp and some speakers. You can hook that up to your computer and that would probably be ideal. Try ebay.com. They have some great fuckin deals.

Nope, thats just not true. I can get far better quality from my sound system on my PC than I can from my CD player. This is because I have a sound card, an am not reling on shitty onboard sound and drivers. Also I have far higher quality speakers on my sound system than I do on most standard CD players. (The one advanatage of package PC's, you can get some sweet extras for virtually nothing)
I dont have a large sterio sound system, I have a £19 player with two very weak speakers. I guarantee to you now my PC speakers destory it.

Couldn't tell you.

Yes, not like an amp on full wack though, but enough not to want to be close to it.
And if so, will it be undistorted?
I haven't noticed distortion. But I don't have it that loud very often.

It may be drivers, if you have a sound card instal the drivers for that. If you use on board sound you should be able to get drivers for that.
You could also try checking out the actual settings on your sound system. They may be set to a different config. Currently my speakers are pissing me around to tell the truth. I can only get sound from 3 at any one time (the other two do work, it depends on the application I'm running), when it should going at 5.1. I don't know why, but its pissing me off something rotten. However its these or my Argos £19 cd player which has virtually no base.

I generally like to use Soulseek and Bit Torrent but, I occasionally use Kazaa Lite. I download full albums sometimes but, if I like it that much, I'll generally work up enough money awhile afterwards and go buy it anyway so I can collect. I do that a lot with Nine Inch Nails and Skinny Puppy.
