What do you make of the argument that FDR knew Pearl Habor was going to happen, and that he wanted it to happen so that he could justify amerika joining the war? I haven't read anything on this but am interested in the idea. Does anyone know of any books or links that can prove/disprove this claim?

Dirty Little Secrets of WW2 page 60 gives just a tad of info and suggests that the accusations were comparible to Elvis sightings. However I am sure there are more detailed writings out there on the subject.

I've heard that British intelligence warned the U$ about it months before.

We actually did an investigation into this theory in a Year 8 History lesson. I can't remeber exact details but I do remember that the British were reported to have known about it. I dont know if they told the Americans. It would make sense if they did not, because they desperately needed the power of ths US to help them and this attack was the ideal opportunity for the US to enter the war, as they did.

Take a look at this, it might shed a bit of light for you:

i learnt that the Americans had an idea that the Japanese would attack but they either didn’t believe it or dint think it would be that bad . it wouldn’t have been such a large military gain for the Japanese if they didn’t use the "divine wind" warriors and Americans back then couldn’t really grasp the idea of the divine wind concept.

^It was a MAJOR gain for japan for about a year america lost battles to japan but japan ran low on rescources. Also there had been word of an attack on pearl harbor but the problem was that many believed it wouldnt happen since they had to nearly fly around half the earth just to attack or drive boats some what near our base on pearl harbor.

"Divine wind" or Kamikaze as the Japanese call it, didn't occur untill 1944/45. During Pearl Harbor there was no desperation or need for need for suicidepilots.

Frankiln Delano Roosevelt received intelligence that the Japanese are going to bomb pearl harbor 10 minutes before the actual bombing... He did not disclose the information partly because of the need to protect his sources and partly because of the bureaucracy of the white house.

Same happened with churchil, he didn't warn the people of conventry ( I might have mistaken the place ) that they were about to bombed because of the need not to inform the NAZI's that their secret ENIGMA codes were broken by joint polish and british scientists.
