God, it would take forever to explain so I would say check out the following books:
SHadows of Tender Fury
Rebellion From The Roots

as to your question, they are still active however still not fighting with arms, now words only.

Here's a link with plenty of articles regarding the Zapatistas:

I would also recommend reading The Zapatista Reader, by Tom Hayden.

The Zapatistas are a group led by Subcomandante Marcos and Comandante Esther among others. They were formed I believe somewhere around 1984, but they didn't make much noise until their takeover of cities in Oaxaca on January 1st 1994. Haven't really done much worth talking about since then. Basically a group of oppressed indios that are fighting for equality and for a decent standard of living. Most of them are stuck cultivating land owned by extremely wealthy families and are struggling to live every day while the gueros up on the hill rake in all the cash from their work. They essentially want their own land to work with so that they don't have to be the wealthy class's *****es. They continually try peaceful means to do what they need to survive but the Mexican government doesn't give and ground, so they take up arms.

that's not how many natives of Latin America were...many pictures of Columbus coming to Latin America to be greeted with gifts, dinners..etc.

And then he enslaved them all.

Bastard.

The natives of Latin America were generally peace-loving, some were warring (ie. Caribs in South America), but most were very peaceful.

Caribs? Weren't they in Cuba? They were the enemies of the Tainos, and supposedly practiced cannibalism. Were there also groups of them in South America?
